TL:DR Soggy Fish and Chips and wonky free for all queuing system in take away section. Excellent Pizzas though.
This restaurant has been a fixture of Portobello for decades and started out as a take away fish and chip shop before adding a very nicely designed restaurant and overall presents a modern and attractive look to customers. It can be very busy. However it may look well designed and fashionable but there are some problems. Firstly the food. Bought a take-away fish supper last night and sorry to say both chips and fish were soggy and greasy. They don't have to be like that and if you take a trip further down the coast to Allandas in Port Seton or their stand at Longniddry beach then you will find far better cooked fish and chips. On the plus side I also had a pizza which was totally excellent...Base was delicious and topping was tasty. Secondly what is going in with their queuing system?!! Normally in a fish and chip you stand at the counter in a queue but here its just a random standing about anywhere. When you go in you don't know where to stand and who is in front of you so I would advice them to sort that out to minimise stress to customers. Also no one welcomes you with a nice hello or smile and all the servers look serious and under pressure. They are pretty much the only fish and chip shop in the area so of course they are so busy the odd bit of criticism might not worry them but things don't last for ever and quality will in the end count. I would go back for pizza but not the fish and chips. There are better places around for that even if they are a bit of a drive...
Read moreI have eaten here many times, both in the restaurant and takeaway. Pretty sure I left a great review before, shame. From hero to zero. In the last 6 months we have been in the restaurant once (food was ok in there), and had a takeaway 3 times. I am afraid to say, each takeaway has been poor. We only ever order Haddock and Chips. Yesterdays serving was the bottom of the gradual decline. Two portions of Haddock and chips and two cans of juice is £23. That is a hell of a lot of money for a takeaway. The fish has been overcooked, the last three times we got takeaway. It was really busy yesterday, so you would assume you are eating freshly cooked fish. I am guessing the opposite happens, the weather is good, the beach is nearby, they know it will be busy. I am guessing they bulk deep fry the fish in advance and then sit it in that window thing. I am wondering whether the person that fries the fish is a vegetarian. They certainly can't be eating the fish, I don't imagine anyone in the establishment is. because nobody would server fish that dry and overcooked. My partners fish was a decent size, mine was thin. The batter was fine, but what good is that if the fish is dry and tough. The chips were ok, but lukewarm. How chips can come out of a chippy, not hot, I will never understand.
Hugely disappointed. We will not eat at St Andrews any more. £23 for a takeaway is a lot of money, they really need to start paying attention to standards. It seems they are so busy, they can just pump food out in any standard, and it makes no difference. What...
Read moreUsed the place many times, food can be great or really bad, tonight they sent the entire order without gluten free stickers on any of the gf items, first off not a great start, secondly, the one portion of chips we got of the two we ordered were barely cooked and soggy, when I called up, the manager who answered was rude, to the point she kept cutting me off when trying to describe what was wrong in favour of asking for my address for delivery, I gave it and tried to carry on telling her what was wrong, she then rudely (basically shouted at over me still talking) asked me for my order as she hadn't listened to a word I'd said and thought I was calling to place an order for delivery. After trying to communicate with this roadblock of a person for several minutes she told me he would rectify the order and she said she would send out the missing chips but not replace the undercooked ones or the food that was supposedly gluten free as it was "definitely gluten free"... they had just forgotten the sticker today. When I said I wasn't happy with this she told me to ask for a refund from just eat because I was shouting at her (literally trying to speak over her shouting continually into the phone) and said to call just eat and get a refund and she would send her driver to collect "her food"... She then hung up on me and sent her driver to collect the food and told us to ask just eat for a refund, no food now and no refund of delivery charge. One of the most obnoxious, people I have ever come across in customer service in my life,...
