Well... where do I begin??
Let’s start from... one of my friends suggested to go there as we were deciding to find a place to meet up, have a coffee and enjoy a good old chat.
Plus, I have walked passed that building before it was turned into a cafe last year and I always see people sitting in it. Why not give it a try, right?
But after i did a little research on google about the reviews, I was quite in disbelief!! How can so many people enjoy it and some others disliked it so much?!?! It was so conflicting, and confusing?! What was going on in this place?
I didn’t tell my friend about these conflicting reviews. And so, I’m writing this review to confirm some of bad experiences were sadly true.
We each ordered a drink. My friends had a hot chocolate and a soya based flat-white. I, myself, always first test the mocha.
The drinks all arrived at different times.
The hot chocolate was spilled on the side of marshmallow. The waitress was in a bit of hurry.
The flat-white and the mocha arrived in a standard presentation.
(Now, this is where it gets bad. I don’t usually write bad reviews but this is the first time I’ve had bad coffee in Edinburgh!)
I have never tasted coffee this SOUR, DRY, and it made your mouth felt like a brush and dessert. So unpleasant!! I felt like brushing my tongue after the first few sips... I was telling myself maybe I’ve just imagined the taste, but until I tried my friend’s flat-white soya, it was horrid. Her drink was more morbid than mines.
We were all pretty surprised no one could finish their drinks. And to think I was gonna get a soup there... after the coffee experience, I’m glad I didn’t.
If a cafe can’t provide a good and enjoyable coffee, why explore anything else? I mean, it’s the basic standards of any cafe, isn’t it?
But nevertheless, you won’t know if you don’t try.
2 stars considering the staff do make an effort to be civilised (and not glaring at you), the interior is old and wood, the location is central.
My friend who suggested was pretty shocked about our experience as she came to this same cafe a few months with her visiting family and they all had a lovely time; food and all!!
Maybe it’s a hit or...
Read moreWorking in customer service myself I completely understand how stressful it can be and how hard servers work. However, my experience today was pretty unnecessary. Went into the cafe today to treat my mum to a birthday brunch. We found an empty seat with some dirty coffee mugs on it and decide to move them to another table (pretty common practice) so we could sit down. We were not being rude and had no bad intentions when doing this. One of the workers then loudly shouted at us, twice, in front of the whole cafe to not do that as we will make the other table dirty, in a really aggressive manner. We were both a bit startled and unsure of what to do at that point considering we had clearly annoyed the server so much. She stormed over and proceeded to aggressively wipe down our table, hitting my mum with the cloth whilst she did so... To be treated like that after not actually doing anything particularly wrong, is pretty poor. I understand customers can be difficult, but i would suggest not taking your bad mood out on ones that haven't done anything. It is appalling customer service and to hit someone with a cloth is even more strange. I would suggest taking your money elsewhere, where the staff...
Read moreCertainly a fan of this spot. When I first entered I chose to sit outside for the fresh air, but when it looked like rain I went back in and realised there is a ton of seating in the back! Way more spacious than originally anticipated.
The latte was lovely, I always like when they do a variety of designs on the top.
I had the sandwhich with asparagus, avacado and halloumi. The bread is SO GOOD you could eat it on its own.
My visit was during my friends lunch hour, and it was more than enough time to sit, order, eat, and lounge a little within the break. You can definitely do a lunch break at this spot.
Only downside is there is no access to WiFi for guests. As most cafe's do offer this, it's something to consider when choosing. Even a "no laptop" would be better than nothing for travellers just...
