Disappointing My mate had really bigged this place up. The first thing I noticed was that you can't choose how spicy you want your food. REAL Thai food is generally very spicy, none of this was. Spice level is just enough to know there's some in it. The portions are really small, which price wise is fine if you buy directly from Ting Thai but if you get a delivery the prices are ridiculous for the portions. The Scottish touch was apparent in the sweet potato crispies (which were soggies rather crispy). Who batters sweet potato? If anyone has ever seen anything battered in Thailand my apologies. I found them weird, way too greasy and the worst way I have ever been served sweet potato - which I love. The same can be said of the chicken wings, (usually love them, hated them here). They came swimming in a weird (not spicy) liquid - I will assume that was the 'Bangkok' bit, but again I never had chicken wings served like that when I was in Bangkok. The seafood noodles my mates favourite was OK, well and authentically flavoured but unimpressive. The fried egg perfect (& extra) It irritated me that they decide which meat you could have with which dish. So some dishes you couldn't have pork with and others you couldn't have duck with. That irritated the bejesus out of me. I ordered something with rice and duck. The duck was cooked to perfection, it was well balanced and there was sufficient if not generous amount of meat. The crowning fail of the evening was 2 slabs of overcooked pork (pretty much everything was done to death), described as caramelised and sticky in the menu. Not sticky, not caramelised, not spicy. Even my mate couldn't make any excuse. Next time I'm in Edinburgh, I won't be eating Thai cos most people agree this is one of the best...
Read moreI had a very negative experience here which was very disappointing. Went in around half 5, plenty of time to eat and pay up before our train home. The atmosphere is very casual. We were sat at high stools facing a window. Service was good at first, we were quickly able to order and get our drinks. We decided to go for a starter and a main. One main was served in a box - very casual style dining. I was very much looking forward to my food. Because we were sat in front of the window, we could see a steady stream of Deliveroo and UberEats drivers taking orders. Probably saw about 7-8 in the space of 20 minutes. I thought this may lead to a delay in our food as the takeaway orders tend to be prioritised - this wasn't a problem at first. After 30 minutes we still didn't have our starter. There was no acknowledgement from the staff that we had been waiting. After 40 minutes we started to get restless - I don't appreciate not being communicated to about the wait but not wanting to put pressure on the wait staff we left it. 45 minutes in, a couple wandered in and sat next to us. We were shocked to see that their food arrived 10 minutes after they ordered. I was very irritated at this point. We were told that the ticket order must have been mixed up. Given we waited 50 minutes for a starter at a casual dining place without any communication from the wait staff we then had to leave as we would probably have not made our train. It was clear that the takeaway orders were being prioritised above the sit-in customers. However, once the people next to us got their food within 10 minutes that was really the straw that broke the camel's back. Extremely...
Read moreTing Thai Caravan is an affordable and fun addition to Edinburgh's dining scene. Small but lively. Once you get past the first hurdle of securing a table when it's busy (no reservations), there are many attractive options on the menu to choose from. I tried a pandan juice (sweet and refreshing), and opted for the crispy tofu and Moo Yang pork with garlic noodles. All delicious - but the tofu was definitely my highlight. The house wine is decent, and served in decanters.
Short bench-like seating may mean you'll be sharing a table with strangers, so if you're looking for an intimate table for two, you may not find that here. I didn't find that a problem.
I found the staff friendly and attentive, for the most part. They were able to make good recommendations and chatted to me whilst I was waiting for friends. However, I've taken one star off this review because after having to run out to the cash machine, (they don't take card and don't mention that anywhere either), the waitress who presented us with the bill wouldn't take the cash and not entirely warmly informed us we were 'supposed to' pay at a desk (and push through the crowd of people who were milling around the small floor space by that point, waiting for a table. Our table was also pointed out by her to waiting diners before we had left, meaning they hovered over us and were sitting down as we were still gathering our belongings).
A slightly sour, pay-and-get-out feel to end what was on the whole a very pleasant meal, but I'll be going back for some more of...
