China Chef — Restaurant in Colchester

Visited this restaurant on Friday 3rd August and pleased to find a separate gluten free menu . Ordered pan fried scallops in teriyaki sauce for starter only to be told the sauce was not gluten free and this shouldn’t have been on the menu. Ordered my second choice of steamed scallops which arrived in a brown sauce. Suspicious, I called the waiter back to check what sauce it was and he said soy sauce. I asked him about f it was gluten free and he checked with the chef and then took it away saying I couldn’t have this either. For main I ordered prawns in black bean sauce but had lost my confidence in the restaurant ability to service gluten free food or even know what they were doing that I was ready to leave. I spoke to the waiter again and asked him to double check the black bean sauce was gluten free which he did and tried to assure me it was 100 per cent safe. I ate the dish cautiously and we spoke to the manager at the end of the night who discounted the bill by £20. Unfortunately this was no concelation as the next day I suffered with coeliac symptoms and am still suffering Monday today . I will not be returning to this place ever again and will be informing others of the incompetence with regards to their understanding of gluten free Chinese menu/...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at China Chef, a Chinese restaurant that exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with traditional decor and soft lighting setting the mood for a relaxing meal.

My husband and I went for food with two friends and the service was average throughout the meal, the food lovely. However, I was very disappointed with the customer service upon payment. My husband was paying the bill and accidentally put an old card in, before he realised what he had done the machine said 'funds not available', if this had been the case then I would have expected it to be dealt with discreetly, however, the lady (owner I believe) all but shouted 'you got no money'. Luckily it was just a mistake and he put the wrong card in, but had this have been someone on a date or anything where they'd made a mistake and didn't have funds, I would have hoped for gentle discretion.
