After a walk to stanage edge on mother's day i thought we would goto cintras tea room after visiting last year.
We arrived mid afternoon and went out the back into the garden area as the weather was nice. It had a good number of tables available to sit at but many of them were unable to be used due the not being cleared of previous visitors. We cleared a table on our own as no staff seemed interested in clearing them when taking orders next to these tables when finished. It said table service on a sign outside but again we had staff walking by us without asking if we wished to order so i went inside to the counter.
I am celiac so cannot have gluten so asked what wad available like soup but they didn't have gluten free bread do no chance of soup or even a sandwich at this tea room. They were able to offer a jacket potato or salad the normal things that establishments not making an effort offer.
I had to settle for a coffee and the last piece of a cake. I went back and waited for the food and drink and wad bought a dirty folk and napkin worth jam our something on it. Not something a celiac wishes to see and possibly be contaminated with either let alone general hygiene and service should be given to anybody.
Or drinks arrived and the server then continued around the garden to take other orders without going and getting our cake or scone without us having to chase for it as is nice to have both items together. I was told this is normal procedure but i would not expect to take other people's orders without completing a party order you have just taken.
So what was a nice visit the year before will not be used again ir recommended to others as we had done before as it seems the service level is now pretty poor...
Read moreDear Cakey Fans!
If you had to ask me: Stewie, given half a chance, in which cake parlour across the UK would you like to roll around naked dripping in cake?
Well, not only would you be surprised by how often I get asked that question*, but I actually do have an answer. And that is a lovely little café nestled away in Hathersage deep in the heart of Derbyshire by the name of Cintra’s.
Now I know you’re chomping at the bit to know what cake I’d like to smear all over myself, and let’s face it, there’s plenty of succulent treats to choose from. Gary, the chef, makes the best cakes around by a country mile and honestly, at about thirty minutes, it’s well worth a trip out from Sheffield to sample what he has to offer.
The cakes, that is (not Gary).
So, on the cake front, Cintra’s does not fail to deliver. There’s a selection of yummy things to tempt you when you walk through the door (which in my case is practically entrapment!).
You’ve got the usual favourites: Coffee and Walnut, Coffee, Lemon, etc., which are all scrummy, but by FAR the popular favourite is the raspberry and almond, which is really light and moist and rich with flavour ( you can really taste the almond). It’s delicious!
I could wax lyrical all day about the raspberry scones, the lovely tea with honey, the sandwiches, and the frankly yummy meat pie, but the cakes really are something else. I’ve got a few more places to try this season, but right now, I give Cintra’s the highest possible marks for their cake.
Cake Score: Five NOMS. Well worth a visit.
Just tell Julie Stewie sent you.

Read moreWe visited for breakfast on a dreary drizzly Sunday morning in October. I had the king size breakfast which is just under ten pounds. My partner has the all day breakfast. Portion sizes were proportionate to the cost and the ingredients used were good.
The staff warned us that the tea pots leak and supplied an extra napkin... Why don't they just get new tea pots?
My partner asked if she could have scrambled eggs, but they only do fried. Too many places say scrambled egg is harder to make than fried, which I find hard to believe. We would of even paid a little extra.
My bacon was a little bit burnt, taking the term 'crispy' to the limit. I wasn't asked how I wanted the bacon, it just turned up well done which unfortunetly is not my preference.
We ate inside due to the weather, but with the door wide open to the outdoor dining area, it wasn't much warmer inside than out.
Inside you can sit upstairs or downstairs. I didn't go upstairs, but downstairs is a little 'cosy' when it's busy.
They had some beautiful looking home made cakes on shelves, which I would definetly try if I was ever there for lunch.
The cafe is in a lovely village in a gorgeous part of the country. My review sounds a little negative in places, as I felt there was a few things that could of been improved upon, but they are not bad enough to put me off...
