The staff serving were real nice so this is nothing on them... but these fish and chips were dreadful... an embarrassment really. I walked past the weatherspoon in town and thought to myself.. no, I'll go get me some proper fish and chips from the fancy place on the seafront, treat myself!! Big mistake, I should have gone spoons, would have got a better plate of food and saved a tenner! The fish was overcooked and far too greasy. The oil soaked through to chips which were swimming in a little pool on the plate. I had to leave a lot of them as they were just too gross. I call them chips, but they weren't proper chips.. instead greasy little skin on fries which I suspect came from the kitchen serving the steaks next door. Skin on fries at a fish and chip restaurant.. are they mad?!?!? Mushy peas tasted of nothing. And the tartar sauce was not home made, cheap and nasty tasting, served in a shell which couldn't look more tacky if they tried. Someone thought, 'we'll make it look really posh if we put this manky tartar sauce in a shell'! Honestly! On the wall in the restaurant is a ridiculous, pretentious, self indulgent photo of Marco doing a strange pout holding a meat clever in his hand.. honestly the guy should be ashamed. Its a fish and chip restaurant... at least get a photo of you with a fish in your hand, or a potato, or standing on a boat... something, anything slightly linked to the great British institution that is fish and chips... not the same photo of yourself taken 20 years ago that you have in the steak restaurant next door!! Whats he playing at? Not proper British fish and chips at all! Disgraceful send off for any tourist on the way back to the continent, a final disappointment delivered by the UK as they leave our once great nation! This restaurant is like a sad reflection of the country, sitting there under the white cliffs of dover, pretending to be the great dish it was, trying to look the part but ultimately delivering a big plate of.... well you know what! Gave it 2 stars only cos the guys serving were decent fellas, otherwise it gets a 0 from me! This is the first time I've ever felt compelled to write a Google review... that's how disappointed...
Read morePopped in at 7:30pm on a Saturday evening while we were in Dover for the weekend, as the menu outside stated takeaway was available until 8pm. A young lady at the counter took our order and almost immediately, a man who appeared to be a manager appeared behind her and cashed up the toll. He then chastised her in front of us for taking our order, as apparently the kitchen had just closed. Highly unprofessional. He then went out the back and a different lady came out from the back. This second lady decided to lay into the poor young lady on the counter for taking an order.
No one communicated anything to us while this was going on and we’d already paid. Thankfully after the second lady had left, the younger lady told us we would still get our food, but there would be a wait. She wasn’t joking. We waited 45 minutes outside for our exorbitantly priced fish and chips. Easily the most expensive I’ve ever had. To top it all off, the chips were overcooked and dry, the fish was average, and the mushy peas were also dry. Perhaps it was just the time of day and we got unlucky, but if we’re ever back in Dover this is one place...
Read moreA pity, we had traveled from NZ and had planned on having our first UK fish and chips at Dover. We arrived at Wheelers at 18:05 on a Sunday, closing house were 19:00. As we entered we approached the counter and had to make way for the staff to scoot around us with the only other dine in customers meal. He then asked us if we'd like a table for two to which we replied yes, he then asked what we wanted to order and pointed to the board behind him, we weren't ready for ordering we hadn't even been offered a seat, as we stood stuttering he thrust a menu to us and said he'll come back. A good five minutes passed and he returned and politely asked what we'd have, we ordered and took a seat ourselves. At 18:35 he arrived with a takeaway bag, dumped it on our table and said that the sauces and the cutlery were at the bottom and walked away. The food was delicious but the experience was a real let down. Very disappointed given we'd...
