This isn't my first time going to 7 Bone although It's been a while since I last went, this time I was part of a group who had two birthdays and one of the birthday celebrants had never been so he wanted to go. I was the only vegetarian in the group. As I've said, I'd gone before and because each time I went it was always so good I have always recommended 7 bone. I love this place. Normally, I have a great time. Great food. Great service. Top notch all around.
This time all of the meat eaters got asked how they'd like their burgers cooked. The waiter was new but really nice. Did a great job, we were very happy with him. When the food came out, all the meat eaters burgers were how they had asked for it, all of them were really happy, however, my burger, (PBBJ which was chosen for the miso peanut butter as I really like both miso and peanut butter, and as a vegetarian got facon (fake bacon- personally not a fan of it as it is difficult to get right and I'm just not that fussed,) it was over cooked and so snapped like wood hence why it is on the side and not eaten. I mentioned that it was overcooked to the server as soon as he gave it to me (it is very obvious because it is hard. For those who have never had faken, it shouldn't be stiff), he took it away but the cook said that is how it is meant to be cooked so I put it too the side and ate the burger. I'd suggest swapping out the facon for thinly sliced carrots or aubergine that are then fried, as I've been told that can work - again I don't care enough personally.
Ironically enough, the meat free burger patty (whatever you want to call it, I don't care) was under cooked. (Again for those who don't know about meat free burgers, it was squidgy and mushy, just how everyone wants their burger....). The miso peanut butter was so thin I could not taste it and the chilli jam was also non existent, I got one bite of it. Even though servers came down and checked on us I gave up by that point as I didn't want to make the others more uncomfortable than we already were being in the downstairs room with two groups who had loud kids with them (we weren't expecting an adult group to be with very young kids ( one of whom was Very loud). I don't hate kids it's just odd placing I felt, and I'd already been dismissed with the first issue with my food. I also noticed that the vegi chilli fires were not equal to the loaded fires the meat eating members of my group received so it was clear I wasn't welcome, at least by this cook. Don't get me wrong the fries were tasty but there really wasn't much of the vegi chilli compared to what toppings the other ( meat and non meat topped )fries had. I honestly questioned what fries I'd had until I found the first kidney bean a quarter of the way through it
My take away from the visit is even with their very large selection of plant based options I'm not going to bother going back as there are many amazing places to eat in Newbury and I'm clearly not welcome. I know they won't care, I'm just one person and tbh I don't care either, I do however appreciate reviews in my own planning so share mine too.
I will admit that I was also the only one in the group to leave a tip as the rest of the group had all enjoyed their food, even the milkshakes were amazing from what I was told and saw on the faces of those who had them, the front of house staff seemed friendly enough and tips are shared out amongst all of the staff. I don't know if they can split the bill but we had to work it out...
Read moreMyself and multiple friends, including one with whom I head to 7Bone on a reasonably regular basis, love this as a place to hang out, relax and enjoy beautifully self-indulgent food. In particular, the friend I mention above is vegan, and the fact that 7Bone cater so well to multiple dietary needs is very impressive and, sadly, unusual. It is to 7Bone's credit that they consistently deliver in this department. I have always found the staff to be friendly, funny, chatty and courteous. The place has an authentically American diner vibe, whilst remaining being very much its own thing. I would also comment that the menu is diverse enough that you can choose from a wide range of options, whilst being sufficiently condensed that, if you just want a regular favourite, you're on safe ground, and won't become overwhelmed by endless options. My personal favourite dishes would have to be the chicken tenders which knock any of their fast food contemporaries into touch. The chicken is delicious, succulent and well seasoned. In terms of mains, it is hard to look past the patty melt as the ultimate comfort food. Unusually for a burger joint, I find it difficult to choose between the chicken or beef options because of how well 7Bone cooks both. They also do an excellent selection of sides - the Mac 'n' cheese being a palpable hit - and lovely craft beers. I heartily...
Read moreSadly choices to eat out in Newbury town are very limited. This has got to be the most unpleasant place in Newbury. I was looking forward to indulging in a guilty pleasure from a dirty burger but was disappointed with the quality. The onion straws batter soaked up so much oil losing the flavour of the onion. Oil pooling in your mouth as you chew. Whilst the first server was pleasant and helpful, the worst part were her colleagues who asked for feedback yet were quickly dismissive and defensive. A simple acknowledgement about it would have been enough and that was that - no big deal, we'll charge it to experience and didn't intend to write a review. However they find the need to gaslight you saying they have never heard such feedback and nobody has complained before in a mocking tone(subjective but this was how it came across from two staff teaming up against your feedback at the same time - not quite the right approach). At this point we just left it at that and didn't bother mentioning the burgers - the smashed patty was overcooked, salty and super greasy burnt crisp around the edges. It was quite early so not busy at all to be sloppy with the quality. Unpleasant experience for us that left a bad taste in our mouths. Not the guilty pleasure we were after so definitely will not recommend. We will...
