Disappointing.
We arrived on Bank Holiday Monday at 11:40 with the three kids and dog so that we could get a nice table with an umbrella near the canal: we didn't want to be stuck inside or outside with no shade!
Part 1 accomplished we got some drinks from the bar, where some of the staff seemed a little the worse for wear; it seems there was some kind of event the night before. The floor in the bar area was incredibly sticky; you would hear people walking across it as if they were walking on Selotape!
We had a peruse of the menu and at a few minutes past 12 placed what appeared the be the second or third food order. Tables outside were filling up at this point so we were quite pleased we had got a shady table. I say shady, the parasol was not big enough to cover the whole table, so I had to sit with in the sun.
Order placed we then had to wait 45 minutes until the dishes appeared! Bearing in mind they didn't start food until 12 and the card payment was at 12:05, how did we not end up with our three simple meals until 12:50?! It would be ok (or at least less "not ok") if we had been warned when ordering, but bearing in mind I had a six year old and two three year olds getting more and more ratty/hungry/bored it was definitely not ok.
The Food:
We ordered 3 x kids meals (sausages, ham and egg, and fish fingers), a burger for the lady and adult ham egg and chips for me.
Although there was nothing wrong with tbe food, it was clearly just glorified school dinners/cafe quality food. The kids' sausages were deep fried, pale brown on the outside and stodgy inside (ie cheap), the fish fingers were ok and both the kids' and adult ham, egg and chips had ham which just looked like sandwich ham slices.
Served with 2 x pots of condiments (containing a total of two ketchup sachets, so back in I had to go) which were just cheapo Booker own brand jobbies, the transport cafe feel was complete!
Surprisingly I enjoyed mine, although I must be used to good quality ingredients as the ham was as tasteless as it looked. I'm not in Wetherspoons, so I expect locally sourced produce.
We wanted dessert, and asked about if there were children's ice creams: no. Anything for kids: no. What flavour is the ice cream? Neapolitan. Choose any three flavours from pink, white and brown.
We ordered ice cream to split between the kids and a sticky toffee pudding for my wife.
20 mins later asked the waitress any sign? She went off. 5 mins later still no sign. It is now 1 hour 45 mins since we ordered our main courses! Went in and asked to cancel them but the bar staff didn't know how to do a card refund. They assured us the were "literally" just coming. Another 5 mins passed and they arrived. Just 30 mins after we ordered. Again a cash and carry job.
A fantastic location, which should have been teeming on a bank holiday lunchtime. It wasn't. I now know why.
Visited in 2008, my return in 2019 was very disappointing. Won't...
Read moreCan't comment on the food. Walked up the caen hill flight from the bottom to eat here today and arrived at 19:50. Google shows their kitchen closes at 20:00 and their sign outside shows that they serve food from 17:00 till 20:00. Apparently not as I was turned away and told the kitchen was closed. I appreciate it's close. But a burger and chips can be sorted at a half decent restaraunt in 10 minutes with relative ease. If your only open in the evening for three hours I'd imagine most places would be happy to serve someone turning up just before the closing time of the kitchen, not at this establishment. The staff were rude and unhelpful. They stated the kitchen was closed and would not be serving. When asked where else locally would be serving food they stated they don't know and that we'd have to walk to town. Although I'm only here for a day I will eventually make it back to Devizes. Rest assured I will not be stopping here. I walked to the Crown which was only 0.6 miles away in town. Made it there in the rain in 14 minutes. The Crown were more than happy to recieve my custom and even adjusted their menu to trouble up my burger. Feel free to swerve this disaster and head to The Crown.
Edit: Ignore the fabricated response from the owner. There were three employees behind the bar when I approached and asked if it was too late to get a table. The blonde lady behind the bar looked at her watch and audibly hmmed before stating the kitchens were closed. Anyomr of them could have piped up if it was closed due to lack of produce and she'd have had no reason to glance her watch if the reason was not time related.
The crown on the other hand still served us desert at 21:25. Take your custom there instead folks! The...
Read moreCalled in as a spur of the moment decision for tea with a few friends. The setting looked idyllic alongside the canal especially on a warm summers evening. - This was the only warmth we received. The landlord (I assume?) who seemed to be running the bar was extremely short with us, as well his young staff. We were berated for not only neglecting to select a table No. prior to ordering our bar food, we were also patronised for ordering the food for the same table as our friends. - He then went on to rant at the general customers for purchasing items using debit cards. - shouting for customers to please come forward with cash! After almost a 25min wait for very basic food orders, these were incorrectly served and barely measured up as adequate fare. - I ordered a pub 'special' - ham, egg and chips. The ham was clearly a supermarket, packet product, whilst one of the eggs was served up broken. Thankful I didn't pay a fortune for it but certainly wont be returning to this place, where clearly the barman needs to be reminded as to why he's there and who pays his bills. - Perhaps a customer service course might also be in order. I can only assume his regulars have become too thick skinned to notice his rude and...
