Stopped in here to have a coffee and scone to kill some time before an appointment. The scone was not warmed up and was average. I had asked for the wifi password and was told they didn't have wifi (which is fine). I asked if it was ok if I used my computer anyway to hotspot and write an email. They said no problem. Within about 10 mins the cafe had gone from empty to very full and suddenly a staff person came over to tell me that 'this wasn't a coworking space' and 'I could only use my laptop while I was having a coffee'. I found this quite rude as I had asked permission to use my laptop and had only just started my coffee. I said ok and that I wasn't planning to stay for long anyway. About 5 mins after this, they asked me if I could move to sit on another (smaller) table with a random woman so that a group could sit where I was sitting. I said I would just like to have a to-go cup for the rest of my coffee as by this point I was nearly done and I didn't want to move for a couple of minutes (and to be honest I was ready to leave the place). The server basically refused to get me a disposable cup and treated me like I was being very unreasonable and told 'sharing is caring' as if I was a child refusing to share my toy. I felt obliged to move to this other table where the woman sat there proceeded to start a conversation with me which I felt I could not avoid but which I didn't want to get into. It's a cute cafe and clearly the locals who come to meet there love it but I will not be going there again myself. I think if someone comes to have a quick coffee by themselves they should be left in peace. It did not feel like a welcoming...
Read moreWe were looking for a café at which to have some lunch after a long drive to York before getting into the crush of the city centre. We saw this cafe whilst driving in and thought it looked appealing from the road.
Whilst the food was fine, although slightly overpriced for the location considering it was equivalent to many small cafés in the city centre, the service was what let it down.
When taking the order, the lady that served us was offhand and brusque in her manner, and when I changed my mind on the order, it was not with friendly courtesy that she approached this but with a less than patient looking countenance that made one feel rather uncomfortable.
When requesting some tapwater, the lady uttered in such a quick and offhand manner âwater on the side, help yourselfâ that I could barely make out her words. It was only my mother who caught it so that I did not have to ask her to repeat.
When having to request more than the very small ramekin of brown sauce that I was given, I did not approach this with ease but with apprehension.
All I would say is, expect an impatient terseness rather than any niceties. Saying this, the other lady running the cafe was more polite. However, we couldnât help feeling a little ill-at-ease, which marred the whole experience.
See the attached photo for the edible but rather unappealingly presented breakfast sandwich, as well as the toastie. The sausage was of good quality, rather than a commercial style one, and the egg was cooked well (gooey in the middle), but rather sparing on the portion size given the price: ÂŁ7.50 for the breakfast sandwich and ÂŁ10.95 for...
Read moreI really want places like this to thrive. It looks like a cute little family cafe with a reasonable selection of interesting breakfasts amongst the classics and I really liked the option to bespoke build your breakfast - a nice touch that.
However there need to be more expertise in the coffee front. The beans are very bitter and a âcappuccinoâ is really coffee with milk and a semblance of foam. These are really simple things to fix, a little practice and tasting the beans would solve it.
I had a cheese toastie with daily chutney and it had a real chilli kick. Unexpected but i liked it, perhaps they could have mentioned it, as it was âfieryâ. Itâs also a little pricey ÂŁ9:95 for a toasted cheese sandwich.
The atmosphere was bustling and very children friendly and the staff were good.
I also felt that the sign on the door which stated they didnât want laptop users (because they are ânot a work space environmentâ) was not welcoming and poorly phrased unnecessarily. I had no desire to bring my laptop at all, but I imagine they may face issues with this, I think dropping the âwe arenât a work space environmentâ would come across better to all customers but still make the point.
Overall nice place with inside and...
