We visited The Fox and Roman after having such a good experience on a previous visit. Unfortunately, this time it didn't shine. We had the same meal as before, the trio of roast meats and an extra side of cauliflower cheese. The beef was very tough, I had difficulty cutting it, the pork had not a vestige of crackling although it was on the menu as having some. Turkey was passable but not enough of it. The roast potatoes cooked in beef dripping were anaemic and soft and veg of carrot and broccoli was flavorless. Parsnip slices were OK. The cauliflower cheese instead of being in a creamy cheese sauce had a stringy cheese that you had to break off to get it on you plate. The whole meal smacked of being kept under a salamander for far too long. The only difference between this meal and our last visit was the time. Last visit was on a Sunday at 3pm and this time it was Sunday at 7.30pm. I understand the kitchen closed at 8pm but did not expect such a deterioration in the food quality. We were very disappointed and it was the 1st time in a very long time I have not left a tip.

Lovely Building inside & out Clean Premises Outdoor seating area to the front / side / back of the building Clean Restrooms Friendly & Polite Staff Not wheelchair accessible inside as it's a busy pub I would advise on booking a table before going to dine Free carpark to the back & side of the premises Dog Friendly inside & outside Method of Payment Card: I'm not sure if they accept cash I gave it a 3 🌟 due to the vegetables on my parents' plates wasn't cooked long enough as the vegetables were hard & raw the carrots were whole carrot that just looked like they were peeled & placed on there plates & not cooked at all but both my Parents enjoyed the beef & wine puff pastry pie It is expensive to dine at the fox & roman, but I wasn't paying the bill my brother was I just hope my brother didn't get charged for the tap water I drank 🙃

Had a day around York taking the Father in-law to the National Railway Museum and other things. So thought it would be good to get a bite to eat after all the walking. Seen the Fox and Roman numerous times driving in and out of York and its always looked welcoming. So as it ideal for the South of York nipped in for a drink and a bite to eat. (Monday 2pm ish) the place has be decorated for Christmas but in a good not over the top way!..... open fire was going, ideal for a windy autumn day and the place is large but cosy at the same time! The staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful and the atmosphere, although not busy was pleasant for this time of day. Great food, all of us really enjoyed it and would consider visiting again. Ideal for the race course and welcomes dogs so again another bonus. Enjoyed our visit.

Disappointed We called in for two late afternoon 2 course meals from the lunch menu. After we’d left I found we’d been charged for one 3 course meal + one main course which was more expensive. The Reward I had on the app for a free drink wouldn’t work. My wife’s starter was fine. When our previously frozen lasagnes arrived they hadn’t been heated thoroughly, although were tasty. Nobody checked if everything was alright. My wife got stomach pains soon after. Any chef should know the importance of reheating meat thoroughly and the ‘reason’ given (that there was only one person in the kitchen) is no reason at all why they couldn’t have been put in the microwave a minute (or whatever needed) longer. I had a long wait for my dessert which came after my coffee and only after I had asked the bar staff to chase it up in the kitchen. My dessert was fine too. The beer was very good. I felt sorry for staff as there clearly weren’t enough of them even though it wasn’t a busy time. They had to serve at the bar, take food out, clear tables, and try and explain why their app wasn’t not working properly. In the circumstances they were very pleasant and patient. Reducing staff to the minimum seems to be what everyone is doing nowadays but people won’t come if the quality and service deteriorates. On a separate matter I can’t understand why lasagne can be on the lunch menu so can be ordered until 5pm (& has an individual price which is not shown on the menu) but cannot be ordered 5 minutes later as it is not on the main all- day menu. I emailed Vintage Inns about that and received a not very helpful reply. Some issues for Vintage Inns...

Stepping into The Fox & Roman in Dringhouses, York, feels like coming home. With its warm, inviting atmosphere and beautifully considered dĂ©cor, this pub strikes the perfect balance between comfort and character. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease, whether you’re stopping in for a casual drink or settling in for a hearty meal.

The food is everything you could hope for from a great pub—delicious, satisfying, and full of flavor. This isn’t fine dining; it’s proper pub food done right. Generous portions, high-quality ingredients, and expertly cooked classics make every meal a treat. Whether it’s a perfectly crisp fish and chips, a rich and comforting pie, or a Sunday roast that feels like it’s been made just for you, every dish hits the spot.

The drink selection is just as impressive, with a fantastic range of ales, wines, and spirits to complement any meal or simply enjoy by the fire.

What truly sets The Fox & Roman apart, however, is the outstanding service. The entire team is friendly, welcoming, and attentive, but special mention must go to Georgie. She is the heartbeat of the place—endlessly kind, professional, and engaging, with a wonderful sense of humour that makes every visit a pleasure. She goes above and beyond to ensure guests have the best experience possible, making each visit feel like a return to a home away from home.

If you’re looking for a proper pub with fantastic food, a warm atmosphere, and top-tier service, The Fox & Roman is an absolute must-visit. Five stars...

Well, am a big fan of Vintage Inn and loved the Dormouse. I have always said the food is good high quality food, fantastic presentation and super prices and a great place for dogs. Unfortunately, life took a turn which meant I haven't been able to visit the outside world much for the passed two years and along with a unplanned relocation I found myself local to F&R. It was my 3rd attempt tonight for visiting, on my last two attempts I actually arrived after the kitchen had closed. Always believe everything happens for a reason and tonight the service I and everyone else received was just what I needed. I was blownaway because I always said that the Dormouse was the best but these guys pulled it out the bag. Everything was spot on, nothing to much of a problem. Friendly staff and great food. I was clear the staff were tired after working hard impacted by the great weather and only a little bit extra wait time because nobody was rushed and I will take that anytime. Within 5 minutes of talking to Jane a new team member I was online booking in for Christmas. Something I never thought I would do but life is full of ups and downs and am so looking forward to my Christmas at the F& R.

New - Hello, very sorry. I have just seen your response. It reminded me of how positive and full of energy I was. Just in case, I will do my best to check that you know but please allow the table for someone else. I will longer be...
