We booked the Orchid Room for a 5 night stay and arrived just after midday. We were greeted by Laura and shown to our room. It looked very nice and was spotlessly clean. We went into York for some sightseeing and dinner and returned mid-evening. The problems started then as we settled down to relax and watch some TV. We had travelled 260 miles / 4.5 hours from home and it had been a long day. We just could not believe the level of traffic noise from the A1036 Tadcaster Road which was just a few feet from the window. Cars, buses, coaches, trucks - it was a nightmare. We were still awake at 1.30 am. I looked out of the window and traffic was still passing quite frequently, lots of taxis at that time. As each vehicle passed the headlights sent a beam of light across the ceiling adding insult to injury. I dropped off to sleep at 2 am but was then awakened again just after 5 am by a continuous stream of vehicles. I should add that the double glazed window and the two large Velux windows were next to useless to reduce the noise from the road. I am amazed that other guests have not commented on the noise. I took videos of the passing traffic with audio and showed the owner at 8 am the following morning. We decided to leave immediately and did not have breakfast and so cannot comment on what might have been. In fairness to Burswood, it might have been a completely different story if we had been in a different room....interesting to note that we were told the owners' house is behind the guest accommodation quite a long way from the road! I cannot provide ratings for the other things. All I can say is that I cannot understand how anyone could sleep in the...
Read moreOur room was excellent and had everything that we needed to make our stay very enjoyable. It was nice to see that their were a lot of condiments in our room, and the milk and bottled water that was supplied was a nice touch. Our room did get a little hot in the evening, but their was an air conditioner readily available to cool the room. Our Breakfast was superb. There was a variety of things on the menu to chose from. The guest house is very well positioned if you are interested in horse racing (like us) and has a handy walk through where you can cut across the racecourse to save time! The walk into York town took us around 25-30 minutes which was okay. There is a bus stop just outside the property so you can pop onto a bus if you don’t like walking! There is a pub just next door to the guest house. We ate there on our first night and would highly recommend anyone staying here to try the menu, as it was very good indeed. I would also recommend the fish and chip shop just outside the guest house as this was also very good. All in all a good place to stay, and I would highly recommend anyone thinking of coming to York to choose this book this guest house as you won’t be...
Read moreNoisy location, deteriorating room quality and faulty fire alarm system aside, the owners’ unprofessional attitude cannot be forgiven. Following a full day of work in London, a delayed train into York and subsequent late arrival we were subject to a barrage of agitated and aggressive calls and texts. The B&Bs unrealistic 6pm check-in deadline should be much further emphasised to guests (with other guests queried having no idea about this) rather than omitted and downplayed in the hotels online description so as to not harm bookings. The overly proud nature and arrogance of Burswood’s owner saw us greeted with a dressing down that included threats to cancel the room and questions as to why we were “playing” the owner given our claim that we were unaware of the check-in policy which was never communicated in any of the many text and calls received before arrival, bizarre. The manner in which the manager is prepared to speak to guests is disgusting, with this embarrassing lack of professionalism, integrity and business acumen in serious need...
