I donāt usually leave bad reviews but this one is necessary. This hotel is definitely not worth the Marriott name, nor the 4 stars. After paying Ā£210 for an overnight stay (including breakfast,) you have to pay Ā£7 a day just to park your car here which there is no mention of online. This should be included in the extortionate price to begin with and not something you are hit with upon arrival. But even though you have paid the Ā£7 to park your car there is no guarantee of you actually getting a parking space, as we left last night and by time we had arrived back there were only about 3 spaces left within the small carpark. The reception staff were lovely so nothing against them. The room was average, but no complimentary water provided, cobwebs all over the ceiling, towels that looked like they hadnāt even been washed and very difficult to sleep with how cold the room was. The pool area was not very clean, a lot of smashed tiles, pipes showing at pool side and my boyfriend got the job to kill the spiders around the pool. It is very much a work/business hotel I think, I personally did not feel comfortable with the amount of big group work meetings going on in the bar. I was IDed when trying to order a drink and my partner was not, after driving here 2 hours from Newcastle and also my partner covered in tattoos I found this ridiculous. Not so much the getting IDed as I understand it is part of her job but was the girl serving who asked to see my IDs reaction and laughing, I honestly think she did it to try to embarrass me. But this girl did not even know how to make the drinks people were asking for. Also the implication that my boyfriend had booked a room with somebody underage with him not getting IDed but I did, as all it took was some common sense to know that I was old enough to drink. We did have a booking for the restaurant but having had this happen at the bar and seeing staff run ragged in the restaurant we choose to leave and go to the Tomahawk Steak House which we were so glad we did. Mainly because of all the money for what we had spent here we were reluctant to spend any more because of what we had actually received for the price. We have stayed other places/halls etc and I have never once been IDed and treated the way in which this staff member treated and belittled me, for half the price of this stay weāve had treatment 10x better elsewhere. The walls are so thin you hear absolutely everything, doors slamming through the night and early into the morning, and constant talking of other guests. We will not...
Read moreFirst off - the reception staff were fab and the view from our room over the race course was amazing. Everything else was awful. On arrival we get to our room which had a balcony - complete with discarded cigarette ends, dirt and dust on the railings and missing tiles. Then we heard the people in room next door talking about using an ashtray and suddenly our room smells of smoke so we shut the balcony door and roast in the heat. Head down to the bar to order food. On the menu was a rack of ribs with coleslaw and chips - we order one. When it arrives, no coleslaw and chips. Mentioned to server who says 'it doesn't come with anything'. Go to bar where ALL the staff tell me it doesn't come with anything, so I hold up the menu and point to where it clearly states that it does. Response? Oh that's an old menu, it shouldn't say that. Regardless,I want what I had ordered. Server asks if I want some chips, I say please and she starts to charge me. At this point I reiterate that in my mind I had already paid for those. She disappeared to get a manager who said I could have chips (but not the coleslaw). The chips duly arrived 15 minutes later by which time we had finished our meals. Whilst we were waiting, we watched the staff move round the bar removing all the menus. I then went to reception and spoke to the duty manager. I mentioned our dirty cigarette strewn balcony and explained they were not ours and that if our room smelt of smoke it was the next doors fault. No apology, just told that people shouldn't smoke in the room. I also complained about the menu. Duty manager went away and came back with a menu which now stated that the ribs came without accompaniments. I explained we had watched the staff change these. Again no apology and only a comment that someone had put out the wrong menus. We then left the bar and went to bed. On checking out the following morning, the receptionist on duty thanked us for reporting the smell of smoke as they had charged the adjoining room £150 for smoking in the room. We really didn't care about that! We got no refunds, no apologies, no discounts no consideration. Appreciate this may be unusual for this hotel based on other reviews but you speak as you find and we found it lacking in almost every single way and we would not stay...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUpdated April 2025: Apart from the name change, nothing has changed a this so called 4-star hotel, at Ā£225 per night itās a lot to be desired, at least with a certain budget brand you know what to expect with room layout, bed and facilities.
I dislike leaving anyone a 1-star review but the overall experience from hotel, to room, to bar to food was appalling and it feels like the staff know this and donāt acknowledge it. Being part of such a large chain, should result in listening to customer feedback, not accepting it.
Rooms are tired, bed is uncomfortable, things in room broken, no working A/C or heating, poor house keeping and more. Pull your finger out and make this back into the hotel it once was.
Updated 8th August 2021: Rooms could still do with a makeover and where we were placed, in a garden room was quite noisy. Neighbours played loud music, smoked on the back and decided to drop litter from the upper floors.
Breakfast was included this time with friendly staff and tasty food. The staff handled a very āpickyā celeb who decided he couldnāt do much for himself and was rather quite rude, so credit to the lady serving him.
Back to the room and we understand Covid rules but for Ā£250 for the night, proper cups and biscuits would be good, other Marriottās are doing it so not quite sure why this one couldnāt. Still not there with the 5-stars.
Original Review (February 2018): Marriott always seems to miss that all important 5 star with me. Rooms feel slightly dated and were quite dusty.
The room had a balcony and a racecourse view which was really nice and the bathroom was massive with both shower and bath. It was quite cold and although they provide radiators, still took its time to warm up.
Staff were friendly, with special thanks to Tony in the bar. Very funny guy and really couldnāt do enough for us.
Restaurant okay, nothing spectacular. We tried both bar and restaurant food. A massive āput off` was the 12.5% service charge, this was applied to everything inc. Tea/Coffee.
Breakfast was heavily priced, we ended up going to Tesco Cafe on one of the mornings, which really surprised us on how...
