First place to call in after car park. I’m in a wheelchair aged 91, daughter using a walker, son-in-law pushing me. Bevy of staff behind counter. Order three coffees. They are exceedingly small and not that special for £9.90. I also sadly purchase a £11.70 crab 1/2 roll with its miserly ingredients, and tiny sliver of coffee cake for £4.50 All of a sudden cafe starts packing up to close roughly 12.15. I’m told they all live off island and as they’d close at 5pm and causeway would not open until then they were finished for day. Can I go somewhere else I ask as we are on island for five more hours. Couple of mutters and a “no”plus pub should be open. Quite a long line of customers now also purchasing last moment food😡. It’s a small community, and just yards from here was another lovely cafe serving until 5pm. Prices were exorbitant here at Chare Ends. We will return to island, but never here.

The cafe looked great but the price spoilt our day somewhat! We paid £53 for: 2 x half crab subs (as shown in photo) we’d seen the prices but assumed we would get a whole sub each and maybe a bit of salad with it. You get half a sandwich with no accompaniment for over £10! 2 x small filled bagels - one coronation chicken and one cheese and ham 1 x cheese and ham baguette 2 x bottles of plain water We even had to pay £1.50 for each portion of ‘salad’ which was 3 slices of cucumber, a few leaves, and a tablespoon of coleslaw. The bagels and baguette did go down well with the kids but we were quite astonished by the price even in these times.

WOW! What an amazing place. We live locally and heard that Chare Ends was under new ownership so thought we'd see how things are now. Forget all the average reviews from before, this is now THE place to go on Holy Island. I had the seafood platter and it was, without doubt, the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot of them in many different countries). The new owners are from Eyemouth so I guess it's not surprising that they're experts in fresh, tasty seafood! Same goes for the Giacopazzis ice-creams they serve there (the Giacopazzi family have been making gelato since the early 1900s in Eyemouth). We'll be back again and again for sure.

Some very poor reviews of this cafe over the past year. Here’s another one. The pricing was bad enough, but the reason for giving this cafe a one star review is prompted by the response my wife and I received when discretely mentioning to a member staff that my wife’s crab sub had a rather dangerous piece of what we thought was fish bone in it. The immediate response was “It won’t be fish bone.” Fair enough, I said, but it’s a nasty piece of something, to which the reply came, “It’s crab. It happens.” Upon showing the very pointy and sharp piece of whatever to said individual, the response was repeated, “It’s crab. It happens.” Wow, I’m thinking, that doesn’t really address the issue. The conversation continued, some description of the 15mm long piece of danger was given as a part of the crab, and at the very last an apology was mumbled and “I’ll mention it in the kitchen”. The apology should have come first, Chare Ends cafe, simple as. We left the cafe knowing we wouldn’t ever be returning but at least knowing that, should we ever find ourselves choking to death on the floor having consumed a similar sub we could console ourselves with the final thought that, “It’s crab....

We visited Holy Island quite early on and fancied a bit of breakfast and read that Chare Ends Cafe was a good place to go, especially as it was dog friendly. On arrival it seemed like it was closing, not much in the worktop fridges or cake displays but they had a good selection of perfectly light breakfasts on the blackboard. To keep it simple we asked for the beans on toast, it wasn't available and only breakfast sandwiches were available - so asked for their veggie sausage sandwich, again not available.. so after that we opted for the egg sandwich which it seemed all they had. I thought this was odd, considering their menu was quite light and small anyway. But, the sandwich was good. The atmosphere felt cold and empty to be honest but the staff seemed nice and friendly. When overhearing other people order at the till, it seemed they didn't have decaf coffee in either nor any of the meat options at that time (but was on the blackboard menu) it just didn't feel well stocked and felt like it was shutting down. For hot drinks and egg sandwiches to take out, I recommend. Sadly it didn't give us a feeling of wanting to return. Hopefully you may have a...
