It was in the later hours of the afternoon that I came here, beset by rain and its consort, the flooding of streets. Unconvinced by the cleansing given unto me by the heavens i did dain to use the bathing facility provided herein. Twas folly, but i knew not. For as i tendered the rising temperature of this shower I failed to imagine. I did not contemplate if the temperature would not abate. That it would keep rising, steaming my room into a veritable sauna while rending flesh from bone in its twisted plumb-heart.
As i began to rinse and shampoo my locks, worn and straggled from the day's travel, i noticed that this unforseen fate had set upon me. That like the lobotomised frog of the victorian scientist, I too was to be scalded against my immediate recognition. I fumbled with the controls, desperate to bring back the temperature at which I knew peace, but minutes of study did not lend me the needed information to parse this ancient device. It was determined to reach some terrifying zenith (or perhaps nadir!) in which i wanted no part.
Stepping from the shower, I realised that i must rinse my hair before i was free of this brimstoney lava spout. Dipping in and out, in fear of burns i attempted to anoint myself in the flames, develop some resistance and leap through fire to be done with the upkeep of my hair. Each lashing was caustic, leaving lasting marks of pain on my temple,.
The steam as it rose sweltered the room, fogging each and every surface in a dew with the rancid texture of rough tripe. I was undeterred, desperate to cleanse my hair of the shampoo i had so brazenly lathered upon it before learning of my fate. I swung my head forward into the stream of satan's micturition, and it slapped forward into both my eyes, smudging the blasted shampoo in and causing my pain to multiply as i doubled over - right into the godless fire.
Desperate to flee, I pawed for a handhold, but my hands did connect not with any such thing, and slipped wildly through the agony pool which collected around my near-deafeated corpse-in-waiting. I turned 360 degress around and made for the tap, and with some degree of struggling was able to arrest the water flow. It was at this point I decided to wash my hair in the sink instead.
5/5 wonderful amenities and great central location. Shower needs...
Read moreWe decided to try the restaurant here from spotting the "Steak and Seafood" sign whilst wandering around earlier during the day, and because it had mixed reviews around the web, so wanted to make an opinion of our own. We were not disappointed. We called an hour or so in advance to see if food was still being served (it was until 9), didn't book because we were also told, "Yeah, just come down, it'll be fine if you're 10 minutes late". Arrived with plenty of time regardless, and as an obviously romantic couple we were offered a corner table where "holding hands is mandatory". Staff were local and friendly, even advised us against ordering a starter unless we were very hungry (we decided to share one therefore, and it was in-fact very large, as were all the plates we saw). Starter served very quickly, and was divine, I'm not normally a seafood person, but it was delicious. Our main took a little longer to come, our waitress was apologetic regarding, and even made a joke about the chef not being bothered any more. However it was worth the wait. I had a medium-well Sirloin, (steaks are cooked only from rare through to medium), and wish I'd had it rare, it was beautifully done. My partner had the scallops - again, not being a seafood person, I cannot comment too much, but cooked in a beautiful sauce. All meals were served with plenty of sides free of charge. The bill came to around £70 for the starter, 2 mains, and a couple of drinks each. We were unable to leave a tip on the EPS machine, and had no money on us, but were that pleased with the service, we came back the following day to leave one. My final thoughts here are that if you like Steak or Seafood, as does everyone you are dining with, and you are willing to spend £20 a plate for top quality food, then this is well worth a look. If you are not a fan of Steak/Seafood, you will find the menu very limiting, and you will...
Read moreLil's on the Waterfront offers a genuinely pleasant and convenient stay in York, particularly suited for those wanting character and a prime location. My recent experience was overwhelmingly positive, marked by a spotlessly clean room, a crucial factor always appreciated. The staff throughout the hotel were uniformly friendly, helpful, and created a welcoming atmosphere, making check-in and any queries effortless.
The standout feature is undoubtedly the location and the in-house pub restaurant downstairs. Sitting with a drink or meal overlooking the canal provides quintessential York charm and lovely views, especially appealing after a day exploring the city. Knowing this relaxed, scenic spot was right beneath my room, which added significant value and convenience to the stay. The overall vibe is comfortable and well maintained.
I absolutely plan to return, which speaks volumes. However, a significant practical drawback exists for early risers or those with morning commitments: breakfast service starts at 10 am. This proved far too late for me, clashing directly with a 9 am. meeting and meaning I missed out entirely. While hotel guests do receive a welcome 25% discount on breakfast when they can attend, this concession doesn't solve the core issue of the service time. For business travellers or anyone needing an early start, this schedule is a genuine inconvenience.
Lil's delivers a clean, friendly, and charming stay in a fantastic waterside location with a lovely pub. The staff are a real asset. Just be acutely aware that if a traditional hotel breakfast is part of your plan, especially before 10 a.m., you'll need to look elsewhere or adjust your schedule. Despite this notable flaw concerning breakfast timing, the overall quality and location mean I will be back, albeit planning my mornings more carefully next time. Recommended, with the breakfast timing caveat...
