Stayed here for three nights for two consecutive weeks for work. The staff were friendly but the staff on reception could do with more training.
Pros: Rooms on the whole are comfortable and clean. Large breakfast room area on the first floor with a self service Buffett breakfast with a large variety of items.
Cons: The rooms have been painted very dark colours. The first week I was given a room which had a window which faced a brick wall and some large A/C generators. Therefore the room felt very dark and dingy with the dark coloured walls making it feel small. The second week I was told I had been upgraded but when I got to the room it was literally about one metre longer than the room I had, had the week earlier. Again the rooms had dark painted walls which made the room feel dingy. Had a view of the main road at the front of the building. Disappointing not to have been given a room with a river view on at least one of the weeks.
** The hotel carpark is £18 per night. This was covered by work expenses. If I was paying this myself I think this is very expensive. The carpark has limited spaces which are taken up very quickly. Its a carpark underneath part of the hotel further down the Main Street. Therefore it is quite a cramped carpark and can be difficult to manoeuvre larger cars around within it. Someone hadn't parked in an actual bay and had dumped their car on the end of a row. We made the staff on reception aware as all guests have to give their registration on check in. So it wouldn't have been hard for them to work out which guest it was, but the car was still causing an obstruction the following morning.
The second week I was in room 312 the mattress in this room was like sleeping on a rock.
The hotel has a small gym a colleague used the gym on a few evenings and noted that when running on the treadmill the lights in the room which are operated by a sensor just go off as the treadmill area musnt be covered by the sensor. This caused the room to go pitch black for her. This is very dangerous as she could have had a serious accident on the treadmill. She had to stop the treadmill then walk around the gym to get the lights to go back on. We told staff on the reception this on the 27/3 but the two staff members said it was unlikely an engineer would change the location of the sensor. They didn't seem to understand the risk if someone falls and how this could leave the hotel wide open to legal action.
The hotel isn't the quietest with the usual doors being banged and people at times talking loudly or one person randomly whistling in their room.
My stay was paid for completely by work. Therefore I wouldn't pay myself to stay in this hotel it is overpriced for what it is.
Also on check in there are self service check in computers or one member of staff on a separate computer. When I tried to check in the second week there was six people in the queue waiting to speak to the member of staff. As you need a booking reference in addition to your name to use the self-service machine which isn't something you always have to hand. Other hotels just require your name. This would have saved people waiting...
Read moreThis was a return visit for myself and my husband as we had stayed here a couple of years ago and the location is perfect to visit the centre of York, but sadly we will not be staying here again! The reasons bieng are:
The bed was 2 single beds put together with a zip running straight down the middle and was very uncomfortable with a massive zip connector at the head end between the pillows!
The pillows were very soft with no body to them so you might as well not have any pillows.
Once the covers on the bed were pulled back there appeared to be a long strand of dark hair on the bottom sheet, which i suppose cant be helped if the maid was dark haired but this was quite visible and obviously the bed was not checked.
The whole room could do witha good touch up as the bathroom appeared to be lovely until you shut the door and the back of the door looked rough, scratched and half the paint had come off, the hand towel rail had just been 'slapped up' and looked like if you touched it it would fall off!
This is the point that has definetly made us not want to stop here again! Imagine 8am the first morning of your stay, you are rudely awoken by a made banging on your door and atempting to get into your room shouting 'room service!' Why would a maid be coming round to your room when you have booked the room for 2 nights at that time and not even waiting for a reply before barging in!!! Secondly, because of the lack of sleep the night before myself and my husband decided to have an hours snooze before going out for the evening, big mistake that was as half an hour into this a maintenance guy working on our floor decided that he also could come barging into our room to 'check something' one quick tap on the door, waiting a millisecond for a response and the door was opened. Absolutely no respect for our privacy what so ever. We were NOT told on arrival that any time during our visit someone may come barging in to our room to carry out any maintenence!
My husband mentioned this to the staff at reception who stated that she didnt know why this had happened but this was totally unacceptable! They however did waiver our car park costs (which are horrendously priced) as compensation of our stay.
The price of our 2 night stay was just short of £250 so this isnt a cheap hotel, on top of that you have to pay car parking costs (which are expensive) in a covered carpark with is very small and dingy with not alot of room for maneuvering!
We certainly will not be staying her again. Very disappointing!
A positive point to end with is the shower was lovely and hot and very roomy, that...
Read moreAbsolutely shocking hotel!!!! I was shocked at how a family room was perceived to look online to how it was on arrival. The rooms were scattered across two different parts so when you get into one lift you have to walk to the next elevator on the other side of the corridor to go to the next set of rooms on the same floor. It was all a mess tbh. Anyway, when I did get into the room it was super squashy, my kids couldn’t move it was restricted. The room smelt badly of sewages especially the bathroom and the water!!! I couldn’t deal with the smell of it the toilet had Pooh stain limescale in the bottom of the toilet. I should have took the picture of the toilet but I was too upset and couldn’t handle the smell, I couldn’t stay I had to go down and complain. The staff at the desk some lady with glasses I can’t recall her name unfortunately but she had such rubbish service said they have no rooms available at all!!! So I asked for a refund and speak to the manager she got me a manager who was honestly trying her hardest to make us have a pleasant stay. Did give us an alternative room interlocking but I just couldn’t cope with the sewage smell. (Considering there was no rooms AT ALL! They pulled this one out quick!)She said they have someone check the taps etc for safety reasons as I’m sure you do but I couldn’t see past the first experience. Anyway she did offer me a refund and we were able to check out. But when I went to the desk she wasn’t there and was the lady from before who said she will process it. Didn’t take any other details said we will get an email WITHIN 4 hours. We didn’t, called them the following morning again no email 2 days later we traced this up and she wasn’t aware of it and even asked us for an email address again but only sent a thankyou for staying at our hotel email which isn’t what we requested. We requested a refund in progress email. I understand a few days for a refund to come through but we still haven’t received it and we’re not getting any answers from the management team although the same lady at the desk who originally dealt with us has been speaking to us on the phone too 😳 Also parking wasn’t made clear that it’s to be paid for separate and isn’t on site and it’s a first come first spot basis otherwise you have to park a mission away. Which my husband almost did having given two kids and heavily pregnant It’s just appalling to be honest! It only got a 1 star because it was in a good location in the town centre. It’s...
