I can't say enough good things about this place! Myself and my sister visited it today, we're mad Harry Potter fans and love anything in the wizarding world!
We booked the tickets online for £6.99 each that's your standard ticket which includes playing 9 holes and at the end based on your individual scores you get a free magical potion drink, see photos...mine was Unicorn Essence😀 Also a top tip if you can, book the first slot at 10.30 we were first in the queue an so received a golden card which gave us a free Magic Meter, see photos.
When you go in one of the staff signs you in, you pick your golf ball and club and are given a booklet and pen to keep score, also inside the booklet which we didn't realise till after there's tips on how to play each hole. You can then have your photos taken with brooms and a back screen and decide after if you want them, we didn't! They also give you a ticket so you can leave all coats, bags etc and pick them up at the end.
You can have 6 attempts each at each hole if you've still not done it you move on to the next. They staggered people about 10/15mins apart so you're not feeling rushed and can just enjoy it.
Everything's laid out brilliantly, very authentic wizarding feel everywhere, some of the holes are quite hard but it's such a laugh to play them. You start on the main floor in the shop area and then go upstairs to the next two and through a dark hallway into the Potting Shed and then on to the last two, where if you want you exit through a fireplace and then it's down into the main shop area again to hand your score card in and your given little badges, and the magical potions you've won. Then you can decide if you like your photos and want to buy them, we didn't. There's a little shop area where you can buy things like chocolate frogs and Butterbeer, flying keys, magical meters, lots of different things to choose from.
All ages can go and enjoy it, me and my sister are in our 50's and we absolutely loved it, such a good laugh and a great price for it all, would definitely go again. Top marks to all the staff too they were all great and made the experience...
Read moreOverall just a bit of harmless fun but i felt overall there were a few flaws. I feel that the staff are clearly told to act the same regardless of the age of customer. This leads to embarrassing moments where you're spoken to like a child, having to grab a ball to see if you're 'magic'. I appreciate it's a bit of fun but as a couple, we just found it slightly cringey and funny. The course was generally fine but genuinely quite difficult. The last hole was near impossible and just a really anticlimactic ending, we gave up trying on this one. I think a fair criticism would to only allow large groups to book close to one another. As a group of two with a group of two in front of us, they were constantly stuck waiting for the group of three in front. This meant that they were waiting by our holes awkwardly watching us for about 5 minutes, we even had to mind hitting them. Please stagger this better or provide actual waiting areas. With a larger group behind us it always made us feel slightly rushed but there was little point as we would have to wait for the delayed couple in front of us anyway. Once finished, we were confused as we arrived back in the main waiting area until we realised wands had to be given back to the main desk. Once at the main desk the staff member was literally slobbering everywhere. They were using a flimsy bit of tissue to blow their noise and seemed incredibly ill. They then used their hands to pass us a tacky little badge and some glittery 'potions' full of e numbers. That made us feel a bit queasy and we washed our hands after to be quite honest. Why are your staff in if they're quite literally slobbering everywhere? I gave three stars because the game was a bit of fun, the setting was lovely and well built but the experience was sort of subpar. The price is decent considering what you get for being in the centre of York but there are a few tweaks to...
Read moreMyself and my partner visited Hole in Wand as a Date Day activity, what with her being mad on Harry Potter. The overall experience is really good but I couldn't help being slightly disappointed. The holes are quite short to be honest, they are really well themed and the experience is fun, but the holes seems to be crammed in. Another slight oversight is the direct access to the gift shop as whilst we were waiting a lot of people saw this door and used this as an opportunity to skip the queue.- staff handled this well, but maybe the idea should be reconsidered as there were a vast number of people trying to come in through the wrong door.
We booked a couples ticket as this includes the same as 2 standard tickets (golf + drink each) plus a £20 voucher to spend in the gift shop and there is a decent selection of paraphernalia to spend that voucher on. We opted for a gift pack of "Butterscotch Beer" and a couple of jars of sweets... and these were quite disappointing when we went to consume them. The chocolate frogs were made from really (and I mean REALLY) cheap chocolate, and the butterscotch beer is nothing more than lager. There is no butterscotch flavour as the blurb would have you believe.
There are plenty of opportunities to upsell, with photo packages and guidebooks etc. but be careful as you could easily spend £40-50 for 2 people (including the £20 voucher though).
All in all it was an enjoyable experience and with the £20 gift voucher it softens the blow for what can be over quite quickly. It took us an hour, but this would easily have been halved if it wasnt for bottlenecks on some of the holes.
Would I go back? Yes - the experience is good, I was just a little disappointed by how small each hole was, and the products purchased with out voucher in...
