From Auckland to Zion and New Orleans to Newport, McDonald's promises an experience as reliable, predictable and familiar as the Golden Arches. Fortunately there is hope: this place has re-imagined the original menu with an avant-garde twist. Serving cold fries and warm Coca Cola was an unexpected turn. I'm shocked it hasn't caught on elsewhere and can only assume that an extensive patent has been filed. A modern, minimalist approach now has the word 'salad' synonymous with 'leaf'. An inspiring and inspired meal.
The restaurant is run with striking efficiency. Arriving at a fast food outlet 30 minutes before closing seldom affords you the feeling that you are fortunate to be served. Whilst waiting for the kitchen to produce their inimitable culinary magic, a number of other would-be customers came in to try their luck. There was none to be had. 20 minutes to closing and the order screens are now off and the tills cashed up. The only way to eat, these people were told, is to order through the app. I marvel at our progress as a civilisation when fulfilling the most basic human need hinges entirely on the availability of a smartphone and an internet connection. Darwin, Keynes and Bell could take us only so far. Newport now carryeth the torch.
The food, the operation....the people. A gentleman in a managerial position that we will pretend was called 'Jacques' held court with a fascinating motivational speech to his team. He exhorted with gusto and emotion from his position at front of house how 'in 15 minutes it's only 4 days left' and he 'wont miss this place'. Newport will surely miss him. I bet he is moving on to bigger challenges and I'm sure he'll achieve greatness. I only hope that he will offer his management style to the highest bidder as a freelance consultant, spread his message far and wide, and deny any one organisation a monopoly on his brilliance. I can't wait to go back and see if they manage...

This visit was deeply frustrating. I ordered and paid through the app, only to arrive and find no trace of the order on their system. We waited. And waited. And no one seemed to take ownership or offer a solution.
Eventually, I asked to speak to the manager â and even then, I had to practically manage the situation myself just to get some answers. Only after I explained, quite firmly, that I had hungry children and needed a resolution now did they finally act.
The manager did eventually agree to sort out the food and told me, âThis oneâs on us todayâ â but that wasnât actually true. The money had already been taken from my account. So unless McDonaldâs plan to refund me separately (they havenât), I was charged and left to fix their failure.
Weâve had good experiences here before, which made this all the more disappointing. The food was okay once it arrived, but the lack of accountability and the passive confusion from staff really took the shine off it. Not great when you're trying to keep things smooth on a travel day.
this was my 5 star review in 2024 Genuinely one of the best McDonald's we have visited always kind staff even when it was heaving...

I phone your Newport branch and woman answered and said I am very sorry but I will offer you two free meals next time. This wasn't good enough has I had paid for this and the branch is just down the road from me in all fairness they could of walked the fries and cheese bites down scarrots lane to Chalmers way to no 74 Pyle Street. She was very rude and abrupt when I asked for the fries and said it's nothing to do with them .I would like a refund of the three large fries and the 20 cheese bites sharer. Will not be using again has I had thre disappointed...
