My partner and I were skeptical about eating inside anywhere on a very warm bank holiday lunchtime but are incredibly glad we gave this cafe a go!
The prices did raise our eyebrows slightly but with it being York centre it seems fair. Besides- it was absolutely worth it! We had a BLT and salmon with poached eggs alongside a smoothie and fresh orange juice- cannot fault the food at all, generous, perfectly made portions, well seasoned and cooked to perfection!
I’m surprised to see bad reviews here, particularly regarding staff. All were attentive and efficient. We saw them move tables to accommodate a family besides how busy it was.
Perhaps what pulled me more to write a review was the waiter who attended to an elderly man on the table beside us. He had issues with his speech and struggled to place his order, but the waiter who served him (around 12 o’clock 25th Aug) was so very sweet and understanding, communicating a lot of the menu patiently. It was lovely to see.
The atmosphere, though busy, was great and all staff were accommodating. The toilets also seemed very clean which is always a bonus!
My only fault was we weren’t told clearly that we’d have to go and pay upfront (though worked this out eventually!)
Will definitely be returning if...
Read moreReally noisy, more so than a normal cafe. Felt very cramped inside. Had no pancakes and didn't tell us till I tried to order them and gave me no time to look for anything else so I ordered the tomato soup with sourdough bread and homemade lemonade. Lemonade was ok but not cold. Soup was awful, too sweet tasted like it was out of a tin. Considering the prices they charge its a joke. Bread was ok though. Also for some reason they have left their children's play area open during the pandemic. A family near us was letting their child run all over the place. I know it's the parents responsibility but surely it's also up to the staff to enforce that the child should be seated at the table and not coughing everywhere. Even though it was table service you had to go to the till to pay which was very cramped with other tables and people wanting takeaway food. We waited 10 minutes before someone told us we had to pay at the till. Slow service, took them a while to even bring menus. Felt a bit ignored by staff since we were sat at the back away from the crowded bit. 3rd time I've been here and the other two times (pre pandemic) it was meh. The food and drink isn't worth what...
Read moreWe went for a brunch with my partner and our friend. Lovely place, simple and clean, and not too busy unlike other places in York. All of the staff were busy but made you feel welcomed and were also very polite.
The coffee was really good and the green tea my friend had was also good. However, when it came to food we were quite disappointed. The pancakes and sandwiches were large portions and very filling. Mine was the pulled pork sandwich, which was £9.50 and very tasty.
However, my partner had ordered the full polish breakfast, for £13, without cucumber. His plate came with what I could describe as a collection of picnic foods spread very thinly. Some sandwich ham, a couple hot dogs, a small portion of scrambled eggs, and a salad. I’ve attached a picture uploaded from Faye K as I didn’t get my own picture.
Overall I would go again, but for the price difference between our meals, it was a bit ridiculous for not only the portion size difference but also the price of the ingredients used...
