The tour was okay overall, but not quite what we expected based on all the glowing 5-star reviews. Josh, our guide, was great guide, energetic and put a lot of effort into his storytelling, but for our family traveling with kids, the humor and stories just didn’t land. The tour covers a few landmarks and ends at The Shambles (a charming street often linked to Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley), but many of the stops felt underwhelming—like random corners near York Minster or a quick pass by the Treasurer’s House. If you’re into ghost stories or enjoy a theatrical storytelling style, this might be more your thing. For us, it didn’t hold the kids’ attention and wasn’t particularly spooky or engaging for a family audience. Perhaps this tour works better for couples or those really into ghost tales, but for families, it’s not the most entertaining option Overall Josh gets a 5 stars, but for our family, the tour itself was passable .

Came tonight on your ghost walk. Came with my aunty and mum I was in my wheel chair. She couldn't of being kinder telling me the safe bumps and how to get round. I knew some from remembering from the lock down videos in 2020 always wanted to come and do one since but never had times. Seeing spirits myself I now know who I'm sensing when I'm around on a day time in york. Now I can say hello properly rarther then trying to stab in the dark. Thank you so much would recommend to anyone disabled and otherwise. History of York mixed with ghost stories. No not like my mums teenage days when they chucked manakings over the wall. Very worth it even mum who lived in york found out so much. (Not a history lover). I do want to go back to some places next time I'm back in york for more a deep dive. Thank you again. Blessings this halloween.

First off well done Dan ( mackenzie has trained you well in the tails , with a good dash of your humour) we have over the years been lucky enough to do a few ghost walks from Inverness to Aberdeen, Edinburgh to Peterborough & this was up there . Good local stories, informative with a guide who keeps you intrigued, informed and safe ( those damn suicidal cyclists!!) Thank you , got to see the sights with some great hints and tips along the way . If you are thinking of taking a tour , not just a ghost one .... you will not go wrong with this 👌 Suitable for all ages , just dress to the weather , wear sensible shoes and go with a open mind 😀 👻

I recently had the absolute pleasure of embarking on a private ghost walking tour in York with the extraordinary guide, Mackenzie, from Shadows of York Tours. Let me start by saying that this experience exceeded all my expectations and left me both captivated and thoroughly spooked in the best possible way.

From the moment we met Mackenzie, her passion for the supernatural and deep knowledge of York's haunted history were evident. Her warm and friendly demeanor immediately put me at ease, even as the anticipation of the tour started to tingle in the air.

As we ventured through the darkened streets of York, Mackenzie skillfully led us to a variety of eerie locations, each with its own chilling tale to tell. Her storytelling abilities were truly exceptional. She effortlessly transported us back in time, painting vivid pictures with her words, and effectively bringing the shadows to life.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Mackenzie's tour was her attention to detail. She provided an abundance of historical facts and intriguing insights into each haunted spot we visited. The level of research she put into her craft was astounding. I was amazed by her ability to seamlessly blend historical context with spine-tingling anecdotes, leaving no stone unturned when it came to unraveling the mysteries of the past.

What set Mackenzie apart was her ability to strike the perfect balance between delivering informative content and keeping the tour exciting and engaging. She skillfully weaved together tales of ghostly encounters, supernatural legends, and the history of York, ensuring that we were on the edge of our seats throughout the entire tour.

Her enthusiasm for the subject matter was infectious, and it was clear that she genuinely cared about creating a memorable experience for her guests. Mackenzie's dedication to providing an authentic and immersive journey into York's ghostly past truly shone through, and it made all the difference.

I cannot recommend Mackenzie and Shadows of York Tours highly enough. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a lover of the paranormal, or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, Mackenzie's tour will exceed your wildest expectations. Prepare to be enthralled, terrified, and ultimately enchanted by her storytelling prowess and genuine passion for all things spooky.

Thank you, Mackenzie, for an unforgettable evening of chills, thrills, and a deeper appreciation for the haunted tales that lie hidden in the shadows of York!...

The Shadows of York Ghost Tour is nothing short of spectacular—a must-do experience that plunges you deep into the spine-tingling mysteries and dark history of York! From the moment the tour begins, the city transforms before your eyes, revealing an eerie underworld of tales that bring the shadows to life. And what made t more special we were able to take our dogs along too.

Our guide , Mackenzie was phenomenal—knowledgeable, captivating, and with just the right amount of theatrical flair. As we wove through narrow medieval lanes and ancient passageways, their storytelling painted vivid pictures of the tragic, chilling, and sometimes downright gruesome events of York’s past. Every twist in the cobbled streets felt like stepping back into history, with ghostly legends unfolding at every stop.

The tour balances spine-chilling horror with fascinating history. You’ll learn about everything from vengeful spirits of the plague era to haunted pubs where shadows still linger, and even true stories that feel stranger than fiction. The guide’s intimate knowledge and passion for York’s ghostly past add an authenticity that brings these stories to life in a way that makes you feel truly immersed.

One highlight was the atmospheric storytelling against the backdrop of the beautifully haunting Shambles. The guide’s pacing was perfect, leaving just enough pause after each tale to let the hairs on the back of your neck settle before diving into the next story. And it’s not all pure fright; there are moments of humor and intrigue that add balance and make the experience all the richer.

Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of ghost stories, or simply looking for a unique and thrilling night out in York, this tour is an absolute gem. It’s spine-tingling, immersive, and so much fun. Shadows of York Ghost Tour is, without question, an unforgettable experience. Just beware—you might not walk back through those darkened...

This was our second time on Mackenzie’s ghost walk, the first being 8 years ago, and honestly, we’d do it again and again. She’s so welcoming and friendly that you feel completely at ease from the moment you meet her.

From start to finish, her communication was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Although she offers group tours, we booked a private one, which felt so personal and perfect for what we wanted. Mackenzie’s passion for York’s history really shines through. She’s done extensive research into every story and brings them to life with such energy and care.

You get the perfect mix of York’s spooky and gruesome side, fascinating historical details, and little personal touches from her own experiences that make it feel authentic and unique.

As a deaf person, I really appreciated how inclusive and deaf-aware she was. Mackenzie made sure I could lip read easily and hear everything, which meant I didn’t miss a thing.

This isn’t just a ghost walk – it’s a memorable, beautifully crafted experience with someone who truly cares about her guests and York’s past. I’d recommend it to anyone, whether you’re visiting or live here already. You’ll come away entertained, intrigued, and perhaps a...
