I and my family have holidayed in Cornwall for thirty years. We have tried pasties all over the county and we all agree that those from the Portreath Bakery are the best we've ever tasted. Those from the bakery in Loe and at Lizard Point are good, but no match. We haven't tried the restaurant- we just make regular trips to the Bakery in Portreath itself and stock-up with as many pasties as we can, during the holiday and for the journey home, which becomes a real torment (A) because we're leaving Cornwall and (B) the because of the almost unendurable waft of wonderful pasties in the boot! So, what about the pasties then? Well, the pastry is the right mix of firm and flake and never tastes greasy. The beef filling is a great texture and the veggies are never mushy. The swede and onions give a lovely tang to the blend and the pepper is certainly there, but doesn't overpower the other ingredients. As for the veggie pasties; they are a revelation. I know this is going to sound dumb, but bear with me on this one; the veggie pasties are exactly the same as the meat ones, but no meat. If you have ever had a veggie pastie where the baker has added what looks suspiciously like frozen mixed veg (you know, diced carrots, peas and sweetcorn) with the misguided notion that the meat needs to be substituted by something, then you'll know the mushy, bland result is a disaster. So in all, the Portreath Bakery gets top votes from us and as for their...
Read moreSuch a shame as pasties are the best we've had in cornwall but I always remember customer service as much as I do the product being sold. The lady serving my dad this morning was incredibly rude. My dad went into the shop to buy 12 pasties so we could take them home to enjoy. Their website has an offer of 12 for 10, so my dad asked if he could take advantage of that, to which she bluntly retorted that he could not, my dad asked why and there was no good reason given. My goodness, surely you should be jumping at the chance to sell so many in 1 sale! The Baker came out of the back and advised that in fact they could honour the offer and she then served my dad the 12 pasties. My dad asked for a bag and a tiny bag which only fit 6 of the pasties was handed over before she left the counter without a word and before my dad could ask for another bag so my dad was left to struggle with all of the pasties. I suggest customer service training is given to this particular individual. It was 8 am, the very start of the morning, so I dread to think how awful the service is towards the end of her shift, especially...
Read moreRead some reviews about gluten free pasties so took a trip there for lunch on Sunday. However when we got there, the lovely lady serving said we'd need to wait an hour to have them cooked so we just bought a couple of gluten sausage rolls for my son and headed elsewhere as it was past lunchtime. We let the lady know we'd be back the following day as we had a look in the freezer and there was plenty of GF options. We returned on Monday and bought lots of goodies to come home with. There was plenty of GF pasties, sausage rolls, bread, rolls, cakes, scones, teacakes. And vegan options too! We drove 4 hours home with the following GF goodies.. 3 pasties, 1 sausage roll, 1 bread roll, 1 Swiss roll, 1 muffin and 2 fruit scones in our little cool bag and it all survived! Everything went straight in the freezer still frozen, apart from the Swiss roll which we have already demolished this evening! Highly recommend!!! But would say phone up beforehand if you are after a freshly cooked GF pasty for lunch. The lady serving recommended this when we went...
