We were planning to go to a restaurant but changed our minds at the last minute to look for something by the sea front and grab some fish n chips. This place looked good from the reviews and we'd both never been to Portreath before so set off here. There's both eat in and takeaway available so as the sun was still high and warm we settled for takeaway. Card and contactless accepted too - ideal. The takeaway area is compact and a bit of a squeeze when busy but otherwise clean and the pricing is easily visible on the board. The prices for fish are generally quite high plus when having chips with it (they only do small or large chips) it can soon add up. Regular cod was £6.70 for just the fish alone. Large chips were £3.50. We paid and waited patiently outside. It was busy so took about 15 minutes for our order to be called out. Food tasted really good. The fish was a really good size and chips were brilliant. My wife said the oil the fish was cooked in wasn't fresh tho and she could tell by the taste as she works in catering herself. To me it didn't detract from the taste and I would definitely re-visit. My only criticism would be the pricing - it came to over £25 for us both which is dear for takeaway fish n chips in my book. Otherwise, a decent chippy with amazing views from the...
Read moreWe went here for breakfast one morning (October 2017). It was busy, but we got a table for two by the window.
We were served with hot drinks after 15 minutes and our meals came around 10 minutes later. Quite slow service.
We both had the small English breakfast which was good, along with black pudding although the presentation on the oblong plate wasn't so good. The granary bread and butter was tasty, and the coffee was reasonable.
The dining area is a very good size; plenty of tables and not too close together. There's plenty of windows to provide a view, background music and flat screen TV muted with subtitles. There's also plenty of outdoor seating too. The staff serving were relaxed, happy, friendly and helpful.
Two negatives: the table wasn't cleaned properly and I found a large tomato sauce stain on my sleeve after we left. Also the chair I sat on had a broken leg. Luckily I spotted it and changed it, and staff took the broken one away.
£17.20 for two breakfasts and three coffee's was reasonable value for what we had.
Compared to our visit last year though, a bit...
Read moreDO NOT go here if you’re vegetarian or vegan! I’m not sure if a vegan would even be able to eat here.
I visited with some friends after seeing on Instagram, they had re done the restaurant. The meals from what we saw looked quite versatile/not just a fish and chip shop. We were wrong, it is very much a sit in fish and chips shop, which doesn't match what you see online
The menu is VERY limited, I don’t eat meat and my only options were nachos or falafels and chips. Or a £25 sharing board…which obviously is too much for one person. It’s a shame they don’t offer it as a smaller main.
A red flag should’ve been the fact that they don’t have a menu online…and if you do find one, it’s not correct. They don’t do veggie curries or chillies ect.
I had to have the nachos, but if you’re vegan you wouldn’t be able to eat them! As they has sour cream and cheese on and had no sign stating that they had alternatives. They were nice but VERY greasy :/
Definitely won’t be back again unfortunately :( servers were nice...
