Excellentay! Very impressed. Large, busy pub with comprehensive variety of outdoor seating to the front of the pub. Car parking to the front with additional larger parking area to the rear. Dogs outside only, not inside the pub. Handpulled cask beers were Wainwright's at a very reasonable £4 a pint and Doombar. Efficient, friendly and helpful staff, very proactive. I was just going to order two starters for lunch, the Nashville Nachos (house fried floured tortillas, dusted in Nashville inspired seasoning with jalapeños, Cheddar sauce and salsa) for £3.99 and the crispy coated halloumi fries with garlic mayonnaise for £4.79. But when I went up to order, staff said you can get three starter portions for a tenner, so it was a no brainer to then add the beer battered salt and pepper mushrooms with blue cheese dip, which would have cost £3.79. So I had £12.57's worth of food for a tenner and didn't need to eat that evening. It was all yum and very filling, more than I would normally eat but a special mention for the nacho tortillas...... wow! They were huge and there were about 6 or 7 of them. A very good starter plateful on its own. Now then, the nacho tortillas are made fresh in house and the last time I had any as good as this was literally decades ago at a superb Mexican restaurant in Windsor called Charlie's Horse. There they were made fresh in front of you and were divine. These at the Black Bull were up there with those from Charlie's Horse. I have never forgotten them. The Black Bull's were standout amazing, light, fluffy, melt in the mouth. Quite simply the best I've had in York and in years. Definitely revisiting and would deffo...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTook my girlfriend, and my sister and her husband and her children for a meal in black bull, and was surprised that for four adult meals (and a alcoholic drink) and three kids meals (with a glass of squash), it only came to about fourty pound, which was cheap considering the food was delivered to our table fast and hot, despite it been very busy, the atmosphere was lovely, and the food was lovely, we had no complaints, we can definitely say that the food has improved ten fold, and the staff are polite, friendly and very accommodating, the toilets was clean and fresh smelling and the floors was clean including the toilets, the main dining area and the outside garden area used as a smoking area. I will definitely be coming back to the black bull, I suggest that if your hungry, give the black bull a try, you will definitely not be able to fault it, in fact you will find yourself like me wanting to go back. The pub has a wooden interior with leather seats in the dining area, it can be a bit packed to try and get everyone in one stall if you have a big family, however that is my own fault for deciding last minute to go, and yet despite us all cramming into one stall we all managed to get our food at the same time, it arrived hot to the table and delivered to us by a lovely waitress who took the time to thank us as she handed us our plates of food. In my opinion regardless of where you live in york, definitely make this one a place to visit, however make sure if you have a big family to get there a bit earlier so you can...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA tale of two pubs It was the best of staff, it was the worst of staff. I've just experienced two complete opposite attitudes to customer service, it's good to end on a positive, so let's deal with the negative first. A lady in our party ordered apple pie with cream, to be told that it was squinty (This is'nt the problem but it made me think that maybe jelly and ice cream were also on offer). She is'nt five, so asked for it with custard. She ate the crust, but then found the apple to be very sour and couldn't eat it. I asked a waitress if we could please have a piece to take home, so she could add her own sugar and cream, as the one she'd been served, really didn't taste good, it was here that l experienced the worst customer service ever. A manager came to see us, if l were to explain her horrendous attitude in full, it would take a while, so just let me say, serious training on how to deal with customers is required, perhaps starting with an apology, I do know her name, but have decided not to say. A girl who's name l also know is Sophie and she was the absolute opposite. When we first entered, she was on her own behind the bar, it was extremely busy, but she served everyone without getting stressed and with a smile. The whole of the night she dealt with every issue that arose in a friendly, professional way, not just with our group, but the whole of the pub. When the current manager leaves, which l hope for the sake of the Black Bull is soon, they don't have to look far for a more superior...
