2024 update. My local (same street) pub, finally reopened after a much needed refit. It does look 100% better, the toilets in particular have improved hugely. Stopped off on a Saturday afternoon to try the new menu. It's not a huge menu but there is some specials. The pie (special) was recommended so we went for that. First impression wasn't great, it wasn't a proper pie! Honestly for £16 I expect a pie to be fully encased in pastry and not be a small bowl of stew with a pastry lid. Really quite disappointed by that On the plus side the filling was generous, lots of meat that was very tender. Could have done with a heavier dusting of flour at the start to have a thicker gravy as it was a bit too thin. Chips were alright, crispy, light etc but again for £16 you might have expected triple cooked. Overall it was a pleasant enough meal but unfortunately wasn't special in any way so was probably about £3 more expensive than it should have been. Up until recently you could pick up a proper pie with triple cooked chips and home made brown sauce and mushy peas from just round the corner for £15. Pretty good overall and still quite new. Let's hope they can make the food a bit more special Old review Good value, no nonsense food. Keep an eye out for the specials board which has some very tasty choices.

I have been using this pub for 43 years when the Landlord was Arnold Bunts. My family and I have often eaten here as the food was always good value and very tasty. Today I spent £38. I have to say I was speechless with what was presented to us. Please see photos. My meal cost £14 for 11 chips and a quarter pounder burger which came in a bun measuring 2.5 inches served on a side plate. Sorry Bricklayers people vote with their feet. You won't be seeing us again. I have put the beer mat on the plate to show its size.

Wow wow wow!! What a brilliant pub! Great selection of stunning ales and one of the best pies I have eaten in a long time. If you are nearby, or visiting Shrewsbury for the day and like your real ale, give them a visit, you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend the dark but mild ale called "Slumbering Monk". The pale ale was nice too. Both are brewed by local brewery Joule's, of Market Drayton. Great service, great ale and superb food. What more do you need from your local pub?

In strong defence of a bad review. I was the organiser of a party of 19 (not 25) booked with Mike for Boxing Day. I initially approached Mike at The Bricklayers only 2 weeks before, whilst enjoying a meal there with friends. I made a booking for 10 to 15 people and promised to confirm numbers as soon as possible. On informing Mike and his staff that it was going to be a booking for 19 (and maybe a few extra once they’d seen the food) it was arranged. From the first meeting, Mike and his staff were kind, helpful, professional and very confident in their approach to my requests. We all enjoyed a great get-together and I’ve since asked the majority how they enjoyed their food. They, and I, all said it was excellent. Ham egg & Chips was obviously no challenge after hearing about all the other delicious meals that were enjoyed! To write a bad review after not informing the staff of any issue, giving them no opportunity to rectify or respond is cowardly and unjustified, and in my opinion should be discarded. Thank you all for...

I always enjoy visiting here. Recommended. Current manager very friendly and helpful. Good grub! Update 5/8/19 - Another terrific meal here with a few Joules brewery pints. I am always so impressed with the care and professionalism of the staff and manager. It's not easy running a pub and yesterday they were short staffed but still looked after us. My meal was perfectly cooked and my adjustment to the set dish carried out without quibble. I think it's an underrated pub and local people and TOURISTS should go in here without concerns about the type of place they are visiting. I personally think I have a much better experience here than the "famous" pub located quite near which is far more expensive and up-itself. In fairness, the other pub has better views but you will pay a lot more. Which you choose depends on what you value. I prefer honest food and beer and can live...
