I was recommended this place by a friend. To say i was disappointed is an understatement.

The waitress was nice who took our order and brought our food. Ordered the compass chicken (mushroom cream sauce with bacon and mozzarella) with mash. The mash was lumpy and flavourless, the chicken dry and sauce flavourless. My partner ordered ribs which again were utterly flavourless. I was asked by the waitress if everything was ok and i explained why i wasn't eating it, she asked if i wanted anything else and took the dish back to the kitchen. I declined anything else as frankly i tried both dishes and i could cook better at home.

A woman came over and i can only assume she is the owner or manager. She said she tried the chicken and it wasn't dry, i said the food had no flavour and she said she's never had anyone complain (i find that hard to believe) and that it must be my taste that's the problem. I can't say that's ever happened before. Its extremely sad that a chain pub 2 doors down cooks better food and that really is saying something. They took the price of my meal off the bill which is a good thing as i wouldn't have paid for it anyway.

I wouldnt recommend this place to anyone. Do not eat here, looking at the reviews i can only guess they had a different chef.

I know what good food tastes like and this isn't it. The pub needs to try harder and the owner needs a lesson in customer service.

Awful...

Well Sunday lunch 24th April 2022, at the compass dreadful, waited over 1hr and 20 minutes for our meal to arrive this is after two polite inquiries asking how much longer do we have to wait, considering it wasn't overly busy and it was a basic Sunday roast ,when 3 lunches eventually arrived roast potatoes frozen not even cooked properly a mixture of vegetables some burnt around there edges, lamb shank reheated so many times it was dry, we complained that the mash potatoes were cold the waitress said ok I'm sorry I'll take it away and get kitchen staff to heat it up that in itself should have been I'll get fresh for you, only to eventually return with cauliflower cheese, a cleaver trick that any magician in the magic circle would have been proud of. On top of this we were sat at a table allowing us to hear the kitchen staff arguing amongst them self's perhaps if they stopped arguing they might just get the orders for food out on time. So I'm afraid the 1 star that I've given this pub / restaurant is for my drinks could not go wrong really it was from a bottle, this is very disappointing because until the recent refurbishment and new management this was a very nice well run...

We have just come home from having a meal here, we’ve been a few times in the past and was always happy with food and service, unfortunately I can’t say the same today. My husband and I order the Sunday roast, my mother in law the light bite menus chicken pieces with new potatoes and peas(she can’t eat a full size meal) Whilst serving the meal the waitress had a coughing episode, so plonking down meal and knocking over my glass of wine she went off to the side to recover, which was ok, but then ignoring the situation went back to the bar, telling the staff what had happened where laughter was in plenty, then comes back and says sorry, I pointed out she’d knocked my glass of wine over to be asked ‘was it full’ poor service in my opinion. The meal was processed turkey, roast were so hard obviously left over from lunchtime, and veg overcooked and limp as a dishcloth. Mother in laws chicken bites were overcooked and hard, as were her new potatoes. I relayed this back when asked if meal was ok, no apology or attempt to at least knock off the price of a glass of wine, just ‘oh I’ll let kitchen know’ Sorry but I won’t be returning or...

The Compass has consistently maintained a high standard as a pub and restaurant. I tend to order the Hunter’s Chicken, which is always delicious. That said, I do still miss the chicken and mushroom dish they offered a few years ago under previous management—it was a favourite of mine. My partner had the Compass Stack Burger (I may not have the exact name right), and it was impressively large! The overall atmosphere was warm and welcoming, although slightly disrupted by a group of men at the end of the bar near the gaming machine who were swearing quite loudly. Service was a little slow at first, as we were seated in a more tucked-away area. I eventually approached a member of staff to ask if we could place our order. This isn’t typical of the service here, so I imagine the staff may have just been preoccupied at the time. All in all, I genuinely enjoy dining at The Compass. The food is consistently well-prepared, the portion sizes are generous, and it reflects exactly the kind of quality and hospitality I believe British pubs should uphold.

This a superb pub restaurant, just a short distance from the M5 motorway, junction 24. It has some interesting decor, made up of new and old material, there is a large outside eating / drinking area, and overall it has a great atmosphere. The food was excellent, beautifully presented, and really good value for the money, although not cheap. I'd suggest that it's a location for adults rather than families, although I think they would be happy to accommodate larger groups. My partner visited the ladies loos, and was really impressed with the appearance and cleanliness. She also commented on the small supply of feminine products, which she highlighted is often very welcome. We enjoyed our visit tremendously and would certainly consider visiting on another occasion.

Starters were not great, nothing wrong with the taste at all but very average. We both really enjoyed our mains though. Mine was the best vegetarian pub burger I have had anywhere so am very pleased to finally find somewhere that actually fills that 'pub grub' craving profile perfectly which is often not the case with the vegetarian options, Places often mix things up trying to make it more interesting when you actually want normal pub food just with meat alternative! Will definitely be coming back for my meal again. My partner said his cod was great & both our chips were great, good chips in a pub is a must! The pub itself is a beautiful cosy building, lovely atmosphere & the staff were all really polite & friendly.
