£230 for four nights Overpriced "deluxe" room.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. The bathroom is slightly above average but the fact you have to fix the blinds so that there isn't a gaping big gap right in the middle of them and you have to squeeze yourself into the toilet area is not good. My partner is by no means a big man and he had trouble squeezing in. The wall paper in the bedroom has black marks and looks generally drab. The curtains need a few more rings on them so that they hang better and don't look like someone just couldn't be bothered finishing the job properly. The radiator has rusted parts showing where the paint has flaked off,so it is also in need of a paint job. The whole room is in need of redecorating. The bed on the other hand was not bad, the fact that it suited me better than it did my partner is his bad luck. The room we were in was quite noisy on a couple of occasions because of the beer tent that is situated right under the window and beer barrels rattling around plus the constant hum of the heating. The general cleanliness was good, they did ask if we needed it cleaning and emptied the wastepaper basket when we asked, though we did find an order of service from a wedding in October in one of the drawers so the cleaning wasn't that thorough. There was the usual refreshments on offer ,tea, coffee etc but no biscuits. This room is not a deluxe room ,at best it is a basic room and should not cost as much as it does, especially at this time of year.

The breakfast on offer wasn't up to standard. It was barely warm , the fried egg was slimy and over salted, the best thing about it was the granary toast, except for the last morning when everything was cooked better. There is nowhere else to have an evening meal so you are obliged to eat there,go further afield or go hungry. The meals are quite expensive , but they are generous and tasty. Would I come back, quite frankly at this time of the year, no I wouldn't, it is quite bleak but being honest I wouldn't come here in the summer either. There is nothing to do in the local area, so if you are the sort of person who likes to be doing something everyday then you are going to have to get the car out , which equals more expense. Ooh, and to add , if you need to keep in touch with the outside world forget it. There is no signal and the...

I stayed here for one night in October with my partner for a short break. Sadly I’m only able to give one star due to unbelievable rudeness and disinterest from the manager, Mike Blaney. The room was fine, a standard, basic double, and it was clean. waiting staff were ok/friendly although the lady that appeared to be in charge who checked us in was courteous but totally aloof. I chose Sea Bass for dinner.. I could just about eat it, it was over cooked and hard on the outside. The veg seemed reheated. (The table could have been cleaner). We went to bed and I was waiting for the fan noise to go off, thinking it was an extractor fan from the kitchen. It didn’t go off. I slept very badly due to the disturbing sound. This could have been mentioned on the listing! I was very tired in the morning and spoke to the manager politely about my experience. He told me it was the cellar fan and that it stayed on all the time. He seemed completely disinterested when I explained how badly I’d slept. Not a hint of apology, more of a ‘ why are you bothering me with this’ attitude.I remained polite at all times..I told him I was very upset about it as my lack of sleep had interfered with my trip..he just said ‘we’ve got your details, we’ll get back to you’. No one got back to me. I sent 4 emails, including my phone no. No reply. I eventually got hold of the manager, on the phone 6 weeks later (23rd Nov), hoping to have a chat about it, and to at least receive an acknowledgement of my emails, an apology, and maybe even some form of compensation. Unfortunately it seems the manager I got on the phone was the manager on duty that morning. He immediately launched into attack mode telling me there was no problem with the room..he was incredibly rude to me, then hung up!! Unbelievable! Obviously his own issues getting in the way of customer...

We booked dinner here as we were camping locally and were really looking forward to having dinner with friends, who were camping too. We booked and turned up just on time at 8.15pm. We ordered, drinks came fast, but shortly after that we were told that 2 of the meals ordered had run out. Fair enough, these things happen on a busy day. But then we were then told that the next choice of food had run out too and my husband had to then choose a 3rd option as number 2 had run out. There was then confusion about what the each 7 of the meals had been ordered, including the changes due to the food shortages. So our friend actually wrote it out again for the staff so it was clear, by which stage the children were getting so hungry. Then after another half hour we were told that everything had run out bar pizzas. We had ordered a variety of meals, most of which we hadn't even been told had run out until the last minute. In the end we got 3 pizzas to share between the 7 of us. The twin sisters who worked there, were amazing - completely on it, apologetic, clearly embarressed and worked to comp everything (the little we ended up having), although they did include the drinks. But by this point it was just before 10pm. These things happen, it was busy and food runs out. But what made it even worse and the reason for 3 stars, was who we think was the manager. He made us feel like we were lucky to get anything and as it was compt that we should be grateful. It was his attitude that really ruined the experience for us, on top of not eating very much. Only to be slightly rectified by the two sisters who were clearly working so hard - thanks girls. We would struggle to return - but the food did look good for those on other tables that got some. Maybe one of those days, but not a great...

Terrible nights sleep, waste/water pipes to other rooms pass through this room, very noisy throughout the night. Thin curtains allowed street lights to beam in and light up the room. Toilet cistern hummed with every flush, in addition the toilet macerator kicked in every half hour throughout the night disturbing my sleep. The bed was noisy as the bolts were loose and it creaked with every turn; mattress was stained with what appeared to be urine on both sides and made me feel quite nauseous, they were huge. Lamp shade was missing with risks of burning self on hot bulb. Shower was nearly impossible to turn on as levers were seized and very stiff, height adjuster was broken, mould was appearing in the silicone around edge of shower tray. Breakfast was good and staff there were attentive but no management was available to discuss above issues and they have ignored two emails to address my concerns. Perhaps consider alternative accommodation.

Spent 3 nights in Bed and Breakfast at The Halfway House. Also had evening meals there as well. What can I say. Fantastic place with brilliant staff. We went on a mid week break with our two dogs, Duke, an English Pointer and Winnie, a mini Daschund. The dogs could not have been made more welcome. Fussed over, treats from the bar, sausage for breakfast. They loved it. The room was quirky and uneven which you would expect from a quite old building but it was clean and tidy and, to be honest, you are in such a spectacular location so why would you want to be in your room. The evening meals were superb, great menu, freshly cooked using local produce (the Haddock just melted in your mouth). A nice variety of beers as well which were very tasty. All this and the location, in my opinion, makes The Halfway House a great place to stay. All of the above though would not be possible without the wonderful staff. We will be back.
