The Mess Hall will always hold a special place in my heart- we came here with a bunch of our guests the morning after we got married. We had already visited previously and loved the food and the friendly atmosphere, so we asked if we could prebook tables for a post-wedding breakfast. Rich was kind enough to reserve the entire restaurant for us for the first hour of opening. All our guests were really happy with their food and we had a great time. The perfect opportunity for last minute catch ups and goodbyes before people got the train home. We had done preorders and the food came out in a very timely fashion and to its usual high standards. I was bleary-eyed and sleep-deprived, but the staff took great care of me and our guests. We will always love The Mess Hall, and although we're now moving upcountry, we will be sure to pop in when we're down visiting family, plus for every anniversary breakfast forever more! Thank you so much Rich, Lily and the rest of your...
Read moreWe decided to stop off at Lostwithiel for a spot of lunch. We spotted the Mess Hall. It looked a little understated from the outside but we thought we'd check out the menu beside its entrance just in case it looked interesting. It was then we noted, looking through the window, it was absolutely buzzing. That's a great sign we thought and managed to get the last table available. What a hidden gem. Staff were super efficient, friendly and the service was excellent (rare these days, hence this review). We opted for the special, eggs royale, with smoked salmon and homemade hollandaise sauce. The dish was sublime. Probably the best I've every tasted. Eggs cooked perfectly and not mean with the smoked salmon either. Highly recommend a visit here and we'll definitely drop in whenever we're in the area again. Oh, and it's very dog friendly too. Well done team,...
Read moreVery nice cafe & little garden ( too many fake plants!?): service good/ friendly & helpful.I was very disappointed to find myself (particularly as a local!) yet again being ripped-off 😞 Struggling to understand how 2 ' poached Eggs on toast' could cost £13, even if it does come with ( superfluous) 3 Mushrooms & a bit of Asparagus!!! Nice chunky bread ( Wholegrain would have been nice) but it was NOT properly toasted which made it soggy: the ' Poached Eggs' were coddled : ( OED: Poached: cooked in a shallow container over a pan of water!). My friend had a Egg/ Mayo sandwich which was lovely but again over-priced at £10! The 2nd cup of Coffee that was served was the wrong type too...To cap it all, the 'prices' on the menu did not have a £ sign in front of them which is very misleading, particularly as my sight is poor.. Cake to be...
