Went with friends who had been a few times before and liked it, sadly there was due to be live music on (we weren't told about this when booking) and they closed the kitchen early without telling us when we arrived or while we were there, we just saw the shutter come down and realised we wouldn't be getting dessert :( Food wasn't bad but we had an issue with the portion size of 2 identical dishes being quite different and the staff really struggled to resolve it until we pushed, all it took was a handful more chips! We didn't make a public fuss or a scene but had to speak to several people to get it sorted. Our waiter told us we'd have to go up to the bar and tell them! Had to keep asking him to get someone to come to the table, he was more interested in larking about and jumping off the stairs, he was dismissive and almost rude. We were trying to eat our dinner so didn't want to get up ideally and shouldn't have had to Food took a long time to arrive too, we seem to have been forgotten as we were the last ones to get served (after 2 tables who arrived after us) even though our dishes weren't complex We may try again but will make sure there isn't an event...

Tonight was our first visit to The Ropemakers. My wife and I are on holiday in Weymouth and we arranged to meet up with some family who live locally for a meal. And wow what a fantastic meal we all had! The portions were very generous and real value for money! I had the steak and ale pie special, which came with mash and a side dish full of fresh vegetables, and it was absolutely delicious! My wife and her 2 cousins all had the scampi and they were all impressed with it and enjoyed it greatly. The desserts were also yummy too, my wife and I both had apple and rhubarb crumble which was deliciously tart! The 2 ladies sampled the treacle tart and the sticky toffee pudding all served with custard, which I have to say would be my only criticism is that there wasn't enough of it, as it was served in a rather small milk type jug. But overall the entire meal was absolutely fantastic and we will most definitely be back next time we're in the area...

Had the pleasure of going to the Ropemakers for a midweek lunch. It was a freezing cold day, but lovely and cosy in the bar. We ordered the soup special, which was roasted pepper soup with fresh soda bread, and a side of garlic chips. The service and attention to detail of all the staff was first rate. The food arrived, took about 15 minutes. And the bowls were nice and hot as was the soup, the flavour was pretty much perfect, slight kick of chilli, and a deep mix of flavours, really good. The bread was fresh and a generous portion with butter. And our side of garlic chips were as the soup was, lovely and hot, with a nice garlic mayonnaise and seasoning. We opted for coffee after our food, which was served in nice big mugs and also nice and hot. All and all we had a great meal, which we both agreed was also good value for money. Thank you chef for the great food, and the staff for their first...

I came to Bridport to meet friends who lived not too far from here to have a catch up and a meal. The pub itself is decorated with lots of bits and pieces of memorabilia, a lot of it related to sports, and has a cosy feeling inside. We had fish and chips for lunch, pleasantly surprised with the size of the fish, which tasted good too, and the chips were nice and fluffy on the inside but crispy on the outside. Mushy peas were pretty good too. All in all it was a really good portion size. Good selection of drinks on offer, I had the Dorset Gold cider which was a nice change from lager which I normally drink.

I ended up in The Ropemakers as they had a session as part of Bridport Folk Festival. Service was quick and they had a good range of real ales available. They also do food, but that wasn't on my agenda for a Saturday afternoon. The pub is lively, but not over noisy, and features a number of aspects of local history on the wall ephemora. It's named after the trade that made Bridport famous. Friendly and welcoming, the food looks good, well worth a visit. It doesn't seem to have changed much since my more frequent visits to the area a few years back. This is what a good town pub should be.

Nice pub, visited 12 months ago, at the time I was served by a new starter behind the bar thought prices wer a tad dear but thought ah well. Thought the Mrs and myself would give it another shot but sorry won't be returning as sorry very over priced 7.50 for a pint and a half for a well known lager and 3.38 for the same pint and a half of lager 50 yards up the road.
