The Travellers Rest — Restaurant in England

I was looking for some nice home-cooked food locally and recently started using ChatGPT instead of Google. It suggested this absolute gem, so we travelled from Whitley Bay to give it a try.

We were greeted by the friendliest staff, and that warmth carried through the whole visit. Customer service makes such a difference and this was outstanding!

The décor and vibe were lovely. The menu had loads of tempting options, after much deliberation, I chose the Korean Fried Chicken Wings. Perfectly cooked, juicy and full of flavour.

For mains I went for the homemade Steak & Ale Pie: packed with tender meat, wrapped in a light but sturdy crust (not just a lid!). The veg tasted fresh and were cooked just right, and the gravy was rich and delicious.

With a little room left I went for the homemade steamed jam sponge with custard — the little chocolate wafer on top was a nice touch. Dessert was as fresh and tasty as the rest of the food.

As a big foodie, I’d give this a solid 9.5/10. Please don’t change a thing — you’ve got something special here. I’ll be recommending you to everyone I know and can’t wait to come back to try more of the menu.

Visited one lunchtime and was surprised at how lovely this place is inside. Easy to get a table and we had not booked. It’s in an unappealing area of Consett (just my opinion), just slightly out of the centre and we had wrongly assumed it would be a bit run down inside. It wasn’t at all, it was lovely. Staff were very friendly and helpful, greeted with a beaming smile from the woman on the bar. We ordered our food at the table. Freshly cooked but if I’m honest the portions were small and the plates themselves were too small for the food and my fish kept falling into the table as I tried to cut it! I enjoyed my fish and chips but my husband was disappointed with his honey chilli chicken. A lot of his fries were all clumped together and the chicken breast was tiny. The plate was padded out with salad😂. He was unimpressed by the portion size for the cost of the meal. The decor is rustic and very nice and there are some free parking spaces outside. Would come back for a drink maybe but possibly not food as we didn’t think it was value for money compared to other local places. Friends took us there last night for a meal was happy cos been there a lot of times before and had a lovely experience but last night no ..one starter was garlic king prawns which came with prawns in the shell do the diner had to put his hands in the garlic sauces to take shells off soup was heated by microwave so had skin on mushroom jalapeno sauces heated by microwave which burnt one diners mouth which caused a blister on the gum ..ordered more drinks after 15 mins asked another waiter which was brought straight up so must have been sitting waiting for the waitress who hadn't bothered getting them main meal one dine had fish pieces and chips no salad or garnish liver and bacon potatoes were dry . surf and turf steak steak was tough response was chef will have a word with butcher maybe was the way it was cooked...finally requested coffee liqueur and waitress brought them up with all of the cream all over the outside of the glass and on to the saucer had to use 3 paper towels to clean it all up .not a very good experience and very disappointed fir our friends...
