Sums up my issues with Camra really. Yes a pub that sells good beers is great but... if the food and service are poor that pub should not be praised based on beer choice alone. It gives the wrong impression of what is commonly a grotty drinking hole.
The property is average, trying to look cosy and period but failing. The service is dull or loud and shouty. The food is usual pub favorites but a bit off.. eg the Chicken and Mushroom pie was clearly cooked by frying the chicken till burnt in a pan resulting in dry chicken with a hint of coal.. and the lasagna was dry and served with 8 dry mini loaves described as garlic bread. Not terrible but the kind of food a drunk student creates.
The beers on offer are great and the beer garden is sunny with views across the valley/car park.
If you want cheap slop with a good pint.. head on in. If you are happy paying £15 upwards for local produce, chef prepared cuisine.. maybe...
Read moreAs the landlord will admit, it's pub grub but it's pub grub done incredibly well. Reservations are definitely recommended, as the tables were all full, but they're placed far enough apart that your meal still feels private. Neither of us could finish our food but it was too good to leave. The fish pie is definitely worth a mention, it was one of the nicest fish pies I've tried. Loads and loads of chunky fish, nice sauce, and cheesy mash with a mixed leaf salad. The white lion is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, and it has a huge outside area too which was really busy...
Read moreA return journey after around 2 years. Sat in the tap room as bar tables reserved. Room bright airy and clean. (The stars are for this) Both ordered the Sunday roast and having eaten here before expected great things. Really enjoyed the food before. However, the 2 meats beef and honey roast ham were disappointing to say the least. The beef came dry, tough and had a long piece of string attached. One piece of beef. The ham approximately 2 x inch square pieces, hidden under the beef. This was balanced on a slab of bland mash. The vegetables, red cabbage, carrots and green beans, were plain boiled and lacked flavour. 2 x tiny roast potatoes and a shop bought yorkshire pudding. Cost. £15.95 Ate it, because I was hungry but would never order a roast dinner...
