I gauge the quality of an establishment by how the staff treat their customers. Yes, quality of food/ambience/value for money etc are important but you know how well a place is run by the attitude the employees have towards their clientele. With this in mind, I will begin with the main positive. The service provided to me by the bar person for the one and only round I bought was both expeditious and polite. From there it went downhill. Ten minutes after I'd bought the drinks, two doormen came up to me and asked me to leave. Incredulous, I asked why. The reason I was given is because it was alleged I or the person I was speaking to had been rude to a barperson! Whilst we were in the discussion with the doormen protesting our innocence (and for the purposes of clarity we were innocent), another member of staff started ratchetting up the temperature by projecting his emotional imbalance onto the proceedings. As the person I was with and I were perfectly calm yet entirely confused, this seemed to frustrate the hot-headed employee (was he the Manager, the Head Barperson? - I don't know). Anyway, after the debate surrounding our innocence concluded, we were told that we needed to leave once we'd finished our drinks. We agreed wholeheartedly. The issues with this whole situation are as follows. If we were guilty, why not just unceremoniously throw us out? Why did they not check CCTV to establish the identity of the culprit? And, why did the barperson that had been offended not identify the actual culprit in person? There were numerous ways to resolve the situation and establish our innocence but the hot-headed employee seemed to have the attitude of shoot first and ask questions later. I concluded that the one consequence of Tim Martin's business model when packing the customers in and keeping prices low is that he doesn't pay management particularly well. As such, when he pays management low salaries it is natural he'll attract younger, less emotionally mature individuals into those positions. It also goes without saying that putting those individuals into positions of such responsibility, without having the emotional tools to succeed in them, negative outcomes will emerge. I just hope the management character in this charade gets the training and support he so evidently needs, before he has another meltdown and alienates further customers. Having never been to a Wetherspoons before, my experience confirms I...
Read moreWe came to this establishment on Friday 1st November, we managed to find a table at the back of the pub. There were people just leaving the table, and they had eaten and had drinks. We sat down, no one came to clear the table. We had to ask twice. Then someone came, took the plates but left the dirty glasses. We then ordered drinks, when the eventually arrived, I had ordered a villa maria Blush Sauvignon. Straight away I could tell it was the white version of the wine. Which I do not like. The server, tried to gas light me and tell me it was defiantly blush he had poured it himself. We told him it definitely wasn’t. He said he could get the bottle if we wanted, he said ok. Brough the bottle over and it was an unopened blush! We said yes that’s the blush but the one poured was a white. He then said no that’s just the condensation on the glass! He said he’d give us another if we liked and we said we would like the blush that we ordered! The food came, and we were also not very impressed. My sister got the pasta Alfredo and it lasted around 8 mouthfuls there were that little on the plate! The chicken dishes, 3 bowls for 7.49, were dry. The Korean chicken came in little bowls, like the pasta, not the big black bowls that everyone else in the pub seemed to have. The kids burger was burned.
On the way out my sister went to the loo, while in there a male member of staff came in to check them but literally just signed the board and went back out. One of the toilets was covered in faeces! So he 100% didn’t check. Which doesn’t give us confidence that they are checked any other time!
For an establishment in Harrogate it is one of the worst we have been to and will not...
Read moreYikes. Have always been a lover of spoons and enjoy spending time with friends here in my local spoons. Today however was a massive thumbs down. Ordered a breakfast that included hash browns. My meal arrives: 2 halves a grilled tomato, 3 slices of mushroom, 1 piece of bacon and 1 sausage. No hash browns. Politely asked over a server to ask about the missing hash browns who hurried to the back to fetch some. When the hash browns did come they were fully frozen. FROZEN. A little warm on the outside from being dipped in oil but frozen all the way through. We called over another server to query the frozen hash browns. This server literally did not care if I lived or died. Acted as though I was an enormous inconvenience to them. No apology whatsoever just a quick “you want them replacing then?”… yeah I’d rather not eat frozen hash browns. After 5 mins or so the same server produced a bowl of hash browns, set them down on the table and walked away without saying a word. This second bowl of hash browns were also inedible, albeit were no longer frozen. They were just sat in a bowl of grease and would drip with fat when I started to cut them up. Such a shame. I get that serving is exhausting, I did it myself for many years. I totally get it. But a simple smile or a sorry would’ve gone such a long way. I felt I had been completely reasonable and polite and super apologetic for having called a server over twice. Don’t expect to be treated as though I am a massive inconvenience when I’m simply just wanting to resolve a small issue. That being said, most of the staff at the Winter Gardens are always happy to help and can’t do enough for you. Won’t be returning any time...
