Aalappeaz UK – Authentic Kerala Flavours in the Heart of Derbyshire It’s not often that a restaurant manages to capture the true essence of Kerala cuisine, but Aalappeaz UK in Derby city centre does exactly that—with honesty, warmth, and flavour.
I started my meal with the Pal Konju, a prawn dish cooked in a delicate coconut milk base. It was rich, comforting, and full of flavour—one of those dishes that immediately reminds you of home. The prawns were perfectly cooked, and the seasoning was spot on, neither overpowering nor bland.
For the mains, we had a traditional Kerala-style spread: steamed basmati rice, fish mango curry Avoli( Pomfret fish), beef roast, natholi fry (anchovies), kakka fry (clams), and sambar. Each dish stood out on its own. The manga meen curry had the perfect balance of heat and tang, while the beef roast was rich, slow-cooked, and deeply satisfying. Both the natholi and kakka fry were prepared with care and authenticity—crispy, spicy, and absolutely delicious. The sambar rounded off the meal beautifully, comforting and full of flavour.
What impressed me just as much as the food was the atmosphere. The restaurant is inviting, the staff are friendly and attentive, and there’s a genuine sense of pride in what they serve. It feels less like dining out and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.
The quality, quantity, and pricing make it excellent value for money. This was more than just a good meal—it was a memorable experience.
If you're in Derbyshire and craving real Kerala food, Aalappeaz UK is absolutely worth a visit.

We are a Sri Lankan family living in Stoke-on-Trent, and today, during our visit to Derby, we came across this wonderful restaurant. Without a doubt, it’s the best Asian restaurant we’ve visited since moving to the UK from Oman.
The moment we walked in, we were impressed by the stunning interior—beautiful lighting, artistic wall decor, and calming background music that created a warm and unique dining atmosphere. The cleanliness and neat arrangement of everything stood out. Cutlery was carefully placed with tissues, and the menu, table mats, plates, and serving dishes were thoughtfully matched to give a star-class dining experience.
As Sri Lankans, we truly appreciated how fresh, hot, and delicious the food was—it tasted so authentic and reminded us of homemade meals. Every dish was full of flavour and quality. The prices were also very reasonable for the experience and taste.
The staff, a Boy and Girl, were incredibly professional and friendly, always serving with a smile. The chef clearly knows their craft—everything was perfect.
This restaurant made our Derbyshire visit extra special. Thank you for the amazing service and food. We highly recommend this place to everyone looking for authentic South Indian/...
Read moreI recently visited Aalappeaz Restaurant and had a truly enjoyable experience. I tried the Palkonch and Kalyana Choru, and both dishes showcased rich, authentic Kerala flavours.
Palkonch was mild and coconut-based, with a smooth texture and subtle seasoning that made it very comforting. It went really well with appam.
Kalyana Choru was a flavour-packed mixed rice with a generous mix of ingredients, both veg and non-veg. It was well-balanced, aromatic, and very satisfying.
The ambience was one of the highlights—it gave a strong traditional Alappuzha feel, with warm lighting and thoughtful decor that reflected Kerala culture. The staff were polite and attentive, and the service was efficient.
Aalappeaz is a great choice if you're looking to enjoy authentic Kerala food in a setting that brings a slice of...
