Went to captains fish bar and restaurant based purely on the reviews we read. On a hot summers afternoon we did not fancy sitting out in the heat but there was no inside dining, however having spoken to Manny he kindly allowed us to have a table for two and get out of the heat for a short reprieve. The service from all the staff was good and friendly, however the most pleasing thing I found was overhearing Manny asking his staff if they'd had a cold drink and a short break to get out of the heat, having worked in the food industry previously I found this to be very considerate and thoughtful. The food was cooked fresh and was definitely noticeable, the portions were very generous and the taste of the fish and chips we ordered was very nice with the fish cooked to perfection. The chips were nice and chunky and were delightful. We went to eat at approx. 5pm so not the busiest part of the day but nonetheless a very positive experience and definitely worth visiting and eating there. The only down was that there were works going on inside the restaurant but this will only make Captain's better in my opinion.

Whenever in Brighton, we always pop here for cod bites and chips and usually love it. Today something was going very wrong indeed! Poor training, new or tired and fed up staff I am unsure, but it wasn’t a nice experience. The inside dining area was empty, so we decided to sit inside to avoid the seagulls. We were immediately asked to move seats from a double table to a single table. I enquired about table service (as per advertised on the door) and the response was “no way, we do not offer table service, that would be impossible.” We queued outside at the kiosk where the operation seemed pretty chaotic. Rather than taking an order number, they were using names. When the food was ready, they would scream the customers name out in such an impatient and aggressive tone. It was uncomfortable. When one particular customer was screamed at, they seemed a little confused and wondered why the food wasn’t being brought to the table. Upon the customer gesturing he thought the food would be brought to him, the man working in the kiosk aggressively pointed his finger and him and then pointed his finger at the desk and shouted “NO. YOU COME HERE NOW” I was so shocked. When customers orders were handed over, sometimes the food would be served on trays if there were multiple meals to be taken to the table. The customers were asked to bring the trays back immediately before eating the food. Was very poor all round. The portion sizes were good (I couldn’t finish it) the food was tasty, but was super greasy, it had not been drained sufficiently once out of the fryer. The prices seemed steeper than I remembered. We paid £36 for two cod bites and chips and two soft drinks. The location is great and if you sit outside the view is fantastic, but still, I don’t think that warrants the extortionate price. No napkins or cutlery available (just a wooden fork) which didn’t help with the excess grease! The toilets were unpleasant too. After witnessing such poor service today, we have decided we probably won’t return when next in Brighton.

My review is completely based on my Customer experience (not food or drink). The weather was fantastic, the establishment was busy, we ordered a jug of Pimm's... No food. Sat outside on the walkway in front of the building. We were sat for OVER 2 HOURS drinking slowly chatting and laughing. At some point nature called. Upon entering the building I was cut-off by a member of staff (one I had seen repeatedly over the course of those 2hrs+, serving customers both on the walkway and beyond the walkway in the enclosure on to the beach), she asked if I needed help. I asked for directions to the Gents and was told the location of the PUBLIC TOILETS further along the walkway. I turned, pointing to the table where we were sat, still with drinks and jug. 180° attitude change... 'apologies and justification' given along with directions to the Gents in the back of the building. Whether a person is a customer or not, there is a wrong and right way to talk to people. The situation could, and should have been handled differently. Upon returning to our table the staff member approached to apologise again. I wasn't impressed with the situation and made my feelings known - stating how she could've handled the interaction. Further justification was given, "toilets are only for customers yada yada..." I guess she hadn't seen us in the prior 2hrs that we were sat out front. Her initial approach should have been better. That said, I accepted the apology with grace. Would I return? Probably not! Communication and Customer Service is FUNDAMENTAL in the service industry, if you can't get that right, you shouldn't be serving or engaging Customers.

It's absolutely amazing. Me and my friends came to Brighton for our first friend group holiday. We came to this side of the pier as we thought it was the best spot, and this led us to discover the existence of Captains. The first thing we saw was this hilarious girl with a megaphone encouraging people to buy food, so we decided to buy some. The food here is so amazing, the taste is absolutely beautiful, I've had the pleasure of experiencing both the cheesy chips and a large fish and chips and they were just legendary. I also brought a banana milkshake, and words can not describe how much I enjoyed it. The staff here are extremely friendly and helpful, we also made acquaintance with a nice lady called Sam. My final verdict is that I 100% agree that this is the best chippy in Brighton.

We came here with my family, thinking its famous for Brighton’s fish & chips. The portions are extremely small. Look at the fish size! Any random pub would have larger fish size than this fish . The menu is very limited; only fast food . I asked for salad, at least some basic veggies; the staff didn’t help my request, they said “only menu items”; whereas they could help by putting some greens & tomatoes into plate (as these items are already inside of hamburger). The restaurant itself seems very old and uncared. The mirrors look dirty and some part of wooden tables are broken. The only good thing is location as its right inside beach. Otherwise, definitely not recommend. Can’t believe we paid more than 60 GBP for this.

Looking for a place to go with 2 young ones on a chilly September evening, the only place we could find was on the beach front. We sat, hungry and cold, when a very nice Manny came over and started chatting whilst cleaning our table. He saw the children and asked if we wanted to sit inside where it was warm. He moved furniture around to accommodate, was such a lovely thing to do to make us more comfortable! This was followed by friendly service from other staff members too. All checking on the table and being all round chatty happy servers! Totally recommend coming along - whether it's a family, couple, young or old something for everyone and hot, fresh, tastey food to add!
