Losteria Italiana was an extraordinary find! We tried to get into a restaurant just down the street, but couldn't. A passer-by suggested we try La Vecchia Scuola and are we glad we did. We were seated straight away. The décor was very inviting and the service was ample.
I started my dinner with the Fungi al aglio which was pan-fired mushrooms finished in a creamy garlic butter sauce served with homemade bread. This selection was one of the best I have ever had, it was remarkable. My wife and a friend had mixed salads to begin with. One was served with a full-flavored Pesto dressing with pine nuts and the other was served with a delightful vinaigrette dressing. Serving sizes are big enough to share and are very fresh.
Our main selections were the Filetto d maiale, which was fillets of pork, Maiale glassato, belly pork, Pollo saltimbocca, chicken breast, and homemade lasagne. The fillets of pork were served with crushed potatoes, sauteed spinach, roasted pine nuts, and a pancetta sage sauce. The pork belly was glazed with apple and honey. This dish was served with crushed potatoes, spinach, a pancetta, pine nuts/sage sauce. The chicken breast was topped with parma ham served with crushed potatoes, asparagus, red pepper and honey puree finished in a marsala and sage sauce. The lasagne was homemade and served with garlic bread. My wife and I finished off our evening with a serving of Copa tiramisc which was homemade with a scrumptious raspberry sauce. There were no complaints from any of the four people in our party. The food, dessert, and presentation were totally over the top.
I must say the prices were not at all expensive and the serving sizes were great at this price point. This is truly a five-star restaurant at very reasonable prices. We will be back at Losteria Italiana on our next trip to York. I highly recommend this...
Read moreTHE Best Value meal we have ever had! Had the Groupon 2-course Lunch for 2 with glass of Prosecco or Red/White Wine and Coffees to finish. Didn't know what to expect because the deal price was so good, but thought for just over £20 quid all-in, even average would have been acceptable. WOW! We arrived 12.30pm on Sunday and waere greeted and seated in lovely surroundings and nice, relaxing background music. My Wife got the Prosecco and a White Wine for me...Good start. Wife is Gluten intolerant with potato allergy also, but lovely girl who served us said no problem they could accommodate on a good selection of the menu and pointed us in the right direction on the list so all happy. She picked the Garlic Mushrooms which came with GF Bread and I had a plateful of very tasty Pate with Toast. Both agreed that was excellent and surprisingly better than our expectations. We both had the Pork Belly, which my wife couldn't have the Mash so they kindly replaced with Carrots in a very nice sauce. The Pork was beautiful with a little bit of Crackling on and the portions....OMG! We both agreed it was fantastic (I even had to finish the last bit of her Pork as she was bursting!) All finished off with 2 lovely Americano Coffees. This was quite simply an outstanding lunch which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Congratulations to the 2 girls waiting the table as you never seemed to stop! Cannot recommend...
Read moreDecided to try somewhere new in York for Halloween and was extremely dissapointed. Booked in advance with a groupon deal (pay £30 for £60 worth of food) and even with the groupon deal it was not worth our money. Our starters were tasteless and for mains we ordered a pizza and the riggatoni bolognese however we were served a spaghetti bolognese which just looked thrown in the bowl and it was clearly reheated from frozen as there was just a puddle of water in the sauce. I did inform the waitress our order was wrong and I got asked if it alright for me to eat or should I send it back but I would rather not waste food, would have preferred it to be correct and fresh in the first place, not reheated slop. It doesn’t take 2 minutes to cook fresh pasta and you can pick a bag of it up for £2 at your local shop so to charge £18 for reheated leftovers is a joke. The same waitress who got our order wrong also got the order terribly wrong of the couple next to us. Asked for the bill to be sorted by the other waitress on shift and waited 10 minutes only to have to go up to the waiter as that task was clearly forgotten but the waiter was helpful and sorted it instead. It was sadly the worst restaurant we have been to. Would...
