Until the second evening of our stay here me and my wife (who had booked the room to come up to York to spend time with me while it was the half term and i was here for work), thought the hotel was amazingly priced and presented very well. On returning in the early evening on the second night we decided to sit and have a drink in the lobby/bar area seeing as it looked so comfortable and welcoming. Upon my wife going to the bar, the duty manager told her it would be her last drink of the evening, (I had ordered and paid for our first drinks, being served by a lovely young lady). When she asked why, he told her it was because she was drunk. This was our second alcoholic drink that day. My wife is Polish, and although has lived here in the UK for 18 years, struggled to pronounce the name of the brand of gin she asked for, which after me confronting him why he told her this, he admitted to me that he assumed she was drunk. Nevertheless my wife came back from the bar in tears, left her drink on the table and said she didnt feel welcome and wasnt in the mood to enjoy her drink anymore and would rather sit in the room. The duty manager then told me he would do anything to make it up to her, as he made a mistake, from which i said i thought was fair and would go and talk to my wife and see how he could make it up to her, which he then agreed he would wait for me to come back to the reception shortly after. I then returned and waited at the reception for 30 minutes for him but he was nowhere to be seen, so then i also felt dismissed, as my wife did. The next day we returned in the evening and as i walked through the lobby to the lift he walked past me shrugging his shoulders and rolling his eyes without me saying a word to him. Going into the room, we noticed it had not been cleaned, leaving us with no clean towels and to top it off the water was off. We wasnt sure if this was deliberate or not, but it sure did feel like it. Aside from the duty manager, all the other staff were friendly, smartly dressed, attentive and very welcoming. The sort od people i wpuld want workung for me. The breakfast menu was vast and was fresh, of good quality, laid out nicely and the lobby area was very nice and comfortable. I had overheard some staff in the mornings dealing with what i felt were difficult guests, in a polite and professional manner, ensuring these guests were happy and satisfied. I feel like the morning staff/porters/chefs should be managers and vice versa. It is a shame that one persons incompetence and pure ignorance forces me to down rate this hotel and i wont be staying again whilst this person is a...
Read moreLovely hotel right in the heart of York. Literally a 2 minute walk and you're in the town.|Hotel is new, so everything is nice and clean. Bed was on the firm side. Pillows okay.|Shower was really good with plenty of hot water. Room made up daily and new towels provided.||Breakfast - Okay. There is something for everyone, but it could be better. Tinned fruit, no fresh fruit apart from some dull tasting apples. No granola or muesli, just cornflakes, coco pops, bran flakes or weetabix. Bacon overcooked and quite hard to eat. I didn't eat anything else from the hot food, but there were sausages (bog standard, not locally produced), beans, scrambled egg, fried potatoes, grilled tomatoes. White and brown sliced bread. Crumpets, bagels, pastries, so like I said before, something for everyone.||I would suggest going to breakfast before 9am, as it gets really busy and I saw people wandering around looking for tables.||Things to do||Spark: this is opposite the hotel. A multi container complex with street food outlets and bars. Great atmosphere. October to March they have Quingo on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Really fun quiz that lasts a couple of hours. Can recommend the Italian for the Arancini and the India for Chaat Masala.||Minster Cathedral: Beautiful cathedral about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. We joined a guided tour which would have been good, but we couldn't hear the guide very well. What we did hear was interesting.||Betty's Tea Room : If you want to book a table, you need to book an afternoon tea which is about £45pp. There is a piano player and you get savory as well as sweet. We didn't bother with this, instead opting for a regular afternoon tea at £29.95. Delicous! Everything was really fresh and tasty. You do need to queue to get in there, but we only waited about 15mins.||York's Chocolate Story : A must!! This is a really good tour and you get plenty of treats on the way round. The tour ends with making your own chocolate lolly and then visiting the shop.||Open Top Bus Tour : This lasts for about an hour. The guide was knowledgable and funny. The ticket lasts 24hrs, costs £16pp and you can hop on and off as many times as you like.||Restaurants ||El Gaucho - Really good steak house and lovely attentive staff|Saap - Thai street food. Really authentic thai food. Delicious||York is really easy to navigate and you can easily do it all on foot if you're able to. The city wall walk is lovely, just a shame you can't get all the way round, but definitely worth doing. It certainly gets...
Read moreThe hotel staff were inattentive. At breakfast there was no seating left (we went down about 10.20 am) we found one seat that still had used cutlery and crockery. I found a member of staff asked them to clean our table, she said she'd send someone round and no one came, despite, our table being in view of the reception staff who could see that it needed cleaning, but instead of cleaning it or getting someone to assist, all 4 looked on and chatted amongst themselves, even when I attempted to get their attention. The room was dirty, crumbs on the carpet, black long hair on the bed and multiple black long hairs on the shower cubicle's walls and floor, dusty shelves and mirrors, toilet flush had fingerprints all over it, one pillowcase had black marks on it. There were no spare pillowcases or duvets. Fire alarm went off at 2.43am. We left the hotel about 11am, only to come back at 17.45pm to see that our room had not been serviced yet. Just as we got back the cleaner knocked on the door, asked if we needed toilet paper or towels, he provided those. He then left, we then had to flag him back to clean our toilet, he then left, we then flagged him down again to say that the shower cubilcle needs cleaning, He proceeded to hand me the shower spray, so I asked for a cloth, he took out a pillowcase from the linen closet, we then discussed who was cleaning the shower him or me (we decided that he should do it, as this was his job, (there should never have been a discussion) also he didn't speak English, he could only say a few phrases), so he came back to clean the shower, however he lay down the clean bath mat he had given us 2 mins earlier in the shower stood all over it with his outdoor shoes whilst poorly cleaning the shower with a PILLOWCASE, (even though he had microfibre cloths available on the cleaning trolley). He then tried to leave again, but I exclaimed that i wanted a clean shower mat, as he had just stood all over the one he'd recently provided. He came back a few mins later with a fresh one. He left again, and we flagged him down once more, to empty our overflowing bins. I had to empty the bin give it to the 'cleaner' and replace the liner myself. I've stayed in quite a few hotels, but never one where the cleaning is so poor, could have saved myself £70 or so and stayed in a Travelodge or Premier Inn, at least I'd likely get a clean room and better breakfast options. It's a shame because on the surface it looks like a nice hotel, but the service let it down...
