Last Friday I travelled down to York, after my gruelling five hour journey I found myself in need of a pint where I immediately found myself in the throes of the Watergate Inn Bar, sure the staff were friendly but one of them filled the room with the stench of body odour to the point I had to rush my much needed pint of which there were no crisps to accompany, what sort of pub has no crisps! I was eventually told how to find my luxurious room with its well imagined four digit door code, thanks for the security and peace of mind there. In I walked to the “family room”, let me make this clear, no family would stay in this room! It is a hole, 1. It does not have a family bathroom to match, it is less than two square metres, you could not swing an insect. 2. It is the most basic of furnishings, the door handle was missing from the wardrobe, the door of the TV cabinet was wedged with kitchen role so not to fling open, the TV remote had no battery cover, the ceiling looked like it was going to cave in. 3. There was bass’ music blearing out from the moment I got there till gone midnight, bad, bad music, Backstreets bak allright twice in quick sucession. So all in all a great stay, not! It was sh*t and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, not only that it was a horrific rip off at £375.00 per night, you’d be better off getting four single rooms at a...
Read moreWe stayed in the small double room. Sadly, the room needs work. There was towels with bleach stains, and no bath/shower towels only small ones. The cleanliness is a big issue, stained pillows, sheets and towels, even the walls were brown. I don’t mind cheap and cheerful but when your bed is dirty that’s where I draw a line. The extension under the bed didn’t work. Kettle cable too short to use where it was so had to boil it on the floor. Bathroom good, although shower doesn’t tilt right so you can barely stand under the water. And water from tap extremely hot, there is no inbetween. The bed is so thin and hard both me and my husband woke up with a bad back, it was a relief to go home to our mattress. There is little space between one side of the bed and the bathroom door which also gets stuck on the carpet and the other side of the bed is against the wall. Staff absolutely lovely and is the reason for 2 stars, as the pub and beer garden is a nice addition to the room. Location good. Overall I noticed we paid £60 a night and the week after it’s £90+, it’s absolutely not worth that amount of money. Price needs to match quality and if hygiene is important to you,...
Read moreA group of friends and myself decided to drop into this quiet, pleasant-looking pub for after-dinner drinks and a good catch up because we'd all been apart for months. Sounds like a flawless plan, no? Apparently not. Upon our arrival, I can only say that we were treated like something on the bottom of the bartender's shoe. The very expression with which she looked at all of us - the whole group - as soon as we set foot through the door made us feel as though we weren't legitimate customers, and perhaps even a waste of time. I'll not lie, I was shocked, horrified and incredibly disappointed with what I had hoped would be a lovely evening, but it didn't even get any better.
My friend, upon finishing her drink was still holding her glass when the bartender came over and forcefully removed the glass from her grip, shortly before demanding to know if we would be purchasing any more drinks, and if not, she would 'have to ask us to leave' - we were there for a grand total of half an hour and had our evening thoroughly ruined. Thank you staff at The Five Lions, we will not be returning, and strongly advise that nobody else...
