Mandeville's is a traditional baker, sandwich shop and cheese emporium. Mandeville's bread is a favourite in the village, with everything from white and brown tins, Hovis, multi-grain loaves, low GI, tiger loaves & farmhouse, as well as rolls of various descriptions. (Not all bread types baked every single day.) The cheese counter is a particular strength, worthy of a delicatessen, with a wide choice of British and some continental cheeses. My favourite for a mature cheddar is Saxon Cross; as you would expect they do a creamy, crumbly Cheshire, and most of the usual suspects and some speciality cheeses are in evidence. Sliced ham, beef and turkey are sold. A small fridge has milk and Longley Farm yogurt, which I love. There is a range of jams and pickles for sale, though I find them too sweet - only the sharp piccalilli is to my taste. The sandwich counter will make your sarnies to your specification, and they do hot or cold pork pies, sausage rolls and pasties (I go for the pork and apple every time). As well as cold drinks you can now get hot tea and coffee. There are ordinary and posh crisps, but no fruit. The cakes and pastries are standard British fare and generally too sweet for my taste, but I do enjoy the gingerbread men and flapjack occasionally, not to mention a vanilla slice. The Apfelstrudel is a disappointment and the Danish pastries wouldn't be recognised by an actual Dane. While we're on the subject, the French bread is basically English bread in a French shape - they do use French flour but fail to use French yeast so it comes out too dense. That's standard for this country, though. At Easter they cook good hot cross buns, and at Christmas full mince pies (though again, too sweet for me - bit of a theme that) and other specialities. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and good for a laugh and a chat with the regulars outside of the busy lunchtime and Saturday morning periods. Access is unfortunately via two steps up from a pavement that is too narrow. They will serve wheelchair users on the pavement, however : just knock...
Read moreLovely old building with a great amount to choose from and lovely staff. They don't seem to stinge on the meat as the sandwich I had was packed full of turkey. However, the cheese was abit to thick for me which ends up creating a glue like texture with the bread.
Also had the carrot cake which was not dry like most and was to die for! I also took a battenburg home which was the huge and so tasty!
Highly recommend visiting this place but you need to know what you want if you are having a sandwich because there was no menu and this was the only issue for me ... being the type of person I am it took me an age to figure out...
Read moreThis baker is supposed to open at 09.00 and I queued outside recently with 3 other people at opening time. It was freezing outside and people in the shop saw us but ignored us. They eventually opened the door at 09.05. I mentioned that they should open at 09.00 and was politely told that they have a lot to do in the morning. One of the other customers told me that they hardly ever open at 09.00. In my opinion this is very poor customer service and I although the baker sells good produce I will have to consider if I will...
