Visited Maggies due to TripAdvisor ratings. Did not book a table as I have yet to visit a chippy that required booking, which proved to be my first mistake as my wife was 8 month pregnant, hungry and walking the distance to look for another good chip shop is out of the question. They insisted that the place is fully booked while i promised that we will be eating and leaving before their guests arrive, as my wife pregnancy would be too much for us to walk around, but in true south England hospitality they refused and showed no consideration for our situation. Thus we settled for a take away, a large haddock, large Cod, gherkin, mushy peas and curry sauce. It took too long for our food to be ready, then we paid 34ÂŖ for the lot! Which is more than what you would pay at Central London Chippy for the same order. But the take away menu promised a 10-12 Oz fish, so the payment should have been justified by the size of the fish expected. After walking some distance until we found a place we can sit and eat, my haddock turned out to be almost half the size their takeaway menu promised. Approximately the size of a medium fish you get in London, not even a large one! Half of what you would get in near by towns like Eastbourne or Brighton. And the chips were countable, so far i was still looking forward to try it as the reviews promised a great fish, and we were so close to the sea so it cannot get any worse. But it definitely did, my wife's Cod was nothing but a fish skin, and small piece of fish still hanging to the skin all wrapped in batter. They have served us what qualified for me to walk back and throw the whole order to their face, perhaps they didn't like me, but am sure was polite as could be, or perhaps they thought am using my wife's pregnancy as an alibi to grab a table and they did not like it, whatever the reason is i am sure it would not make them serve me a tiny piece of Cod where most of the fish gone missing and just skin instead. But my wife refused i go back and insisted we get by and just eat something else when we get back home, we were too tired and hungry by then and had to walk some distance in order to find a bench to sit and eat. The only good thing was that the fishes were fresh, which what you would expect from any chippy on a beach town anyway. Other than that, the batter was too thin, there was not much chips and they were crusty outside the way a steak house would do them and not a chip shop, if i wanted crusty chips i could have went to a steak place. The curry sauce was not bad, but the mushy peas were over boiled and almost lost all taste to them. We ended buying a Pizza on our way home, and and I ended up with a long lecture from my wife to never go with TripAdvisor...
   Read moreA fisherman style restaurant.
Let's say you are in Britain, ÃŽn Hastings, and you want to satisfy your gourmet pleasures and eating something traditional. I always do that when I am visiting a foreign country. So you want your curiosity to be satisfied.
What is the most traditional plate in a restaurant located in a fisherman town? Fish and chips, of course. You have the possibility to serve fish and chips in almost all restaurants in Hastings but let's say you are more pretentious.
You want the fish to be fresh, just captured - in fact you want "the catch of the day - and you want to be sure that you are not served with refrigerated fish and... you want to see with your own eyes the process of kooking.
There are a lot of conditions and if you want all of them to be fulfilled, people might say about you that you are not hungry, you just want to be carping. AAAND... you want to serve the meal in an old building of a fisherman house. Now, this is a challenge.
Believe it or not there is such a restaurant that can fulfil all your pretentious requests and you can find it in Hastings, under the name of "Maggie's fish & chips". And guess what? It is in the same building with fishmarket, at the first floor (second floor for the yankees).
Before you decide to go there, to serve a plate of fish and chips, you should know that this is a small restaurant with open kitchen - you can see how your meal is prepared - and as an inconvenient for you, is that you can smell everything is kooking in the kitchen of the restaurant.
The restaurant is in an old fisherman house, at the first floor (second floor for USA citizens), it has about 8 or 9 tables inside, approximately 30 seats and there is a very narrow balcony with 4 tables for 2 persons each.
The food is DELICIOUS, the taste of fish is that what suppose to be, the portions are big enough and the prices are reasonable. I recommend you to order a fish from the chapter "catch of the...
Read moreFood was ok but found what looked like a 'large piece of Gerkin' in the tartar sauce that had not been blended correctly or possibly the condiment pots were not changed between customers as they were very short staffed the day we went there. Got my order wrong too. When I questioned this all, the staff were very rude towards me telling me it was my fault. Service was awful, and the booking service is appalling too. Lacks any type of organisation. They asked us to come back in 30 minutes when we arrived asking for a table. On returning, the table booked was still occupied by the previous guests who had not finished eating their main course and were in the process of ordering desserts. All very fraught and hurried. We had to wait another 25 minutes and were left standing in the process in a very cramped venue. Another chap was overcharged which when he queried his bill they were rude to him citing he had a larger piece of fish instead hence the increase. You had to go up and pay at rhe counter as nobody came to the table, only to bring the bill. Service was bad. I had an upset stomach after eating there too. Won't be returning anytime in the future. Was also a very pricey meal for three people at a cost of over ÂŖ50!. Over rated food establishment and a too tiny venue to cope with demand. It's also up two flights of stairs outside. Not good for anyone with walking or climbing stair issues or needs wheelchair access....
