Royal Standard — Restaurant in Hastings

It's a boozer simples. Lovely old pub on the outside typical of Victorian corner pubs. Inside one bar. Music pumped from the decks in the corner bit loud to be honest but I supped a golden ale which was good and the pub got crowded ready for Cheese Bingo.

We were lucky as we had a table so getting the good vibes the pub was now giving out early Saturday tea time, we decided to have another ale and join in Cheese Bingo.

Never played Bingo for cheese before but for £1 gave it a go. For a line you win cheese for a full house....cheese port etc. Great fun. Plenty of lines to win and cheese to give away. The crowd engaged totally it seemed competitive but good natured. Biscuits, and cheese were brought round on plates complimentary for customers to munch on nice touch.

This place is certainly of no standard let alone a royal standard, how ironic. I witnessed not only what looked to be a short and curly hair in the sauce on my burger, but I witnessed shouting at young children on my visit, and the attitude on the bar staff is unbelievable. How they’re allowed to speak in the manner they do in a popular tourist establishment is beyond my belief. We waited shy of 2 hours for what seemed to be a warmed up rustlers burger with ketchup thrown in, and didn’t receive so much as an apology when I made my complaint. The Royal Standard is a traditional public house owned by Shepherd Neame, England's oldest brewery, and located on the Hastings seafront. It offers a decent selection of hand-pumped ales along with the usual range of lagers & all things alcoholic. It oozes a comfy atmosphere inside, like a good community pub usually does. Had a couple of beers there during my day trip to Hastings & Rye, and the beers were fresh and crisp. Staff were very friendly and down-to-earth indeed.
