This is easily the worst room I have stayed in for many years. First experience was a very offhand person (I think one of the owners) sitting smoking outside the back door. When I asked her how to get in to check in she was rather grumpy. As advised I went to the bar and asked again. The landlord asked me to fill in name address Car and credit card details on a sheet of paper, I hope that is kept secure! We were shown up to our room by a young woman who was polite. Up several flights of stairs we finally got to the room. The room was very tatty, poorly furnished (no chair, only one bedside lamp, stained carpet, very cramped.) The room was nothing like the photographs on the website, maybe you might be lucky and get the one good room? We left our bags in the room and went straight out for a walk. We also found out at this point that the pub is shut on Sunday evenings, so don’t go there expecting a drink or meal in the bar on Sunday! On our return at about 11pm the pub was all shut up and deserted, so we made our way to the room only to find that the room, and especially the bathroom stank of tobacco smoke. Having booked and paid for no smoking premises, this was an unpleasant surprise, but there was no one on hand to complain to so we just had to go to bed and put up with it. In the morning the smell was even worse, the bathroom smelled as if someone was actually smoking in there, there was no fan to get rid of the smell, and no window in the bathroom. We went downstairs to complain and were given the key to another room to use the bathroom in there - not exactly convenient! Actually, this bedroom looked a little bit like the one in the photo, but quite a bit shabbier, I guess the photo was taken several years ago. This bathroom did not smell of smoke, however, the shower didn’t work! The water came out as a trickle and barely lukewarm it was so bad it really was better not to bother wasting the time trying to use it to wash. We had paid £99 for 1 night, breakfast not included, this is a right ripoff to be honest. I have stayed in better places at half the cost! When we left in the morning the owners and other staff were all sitting by the back door smoking. The advert states clearly that the premises are non smoking but the owners and staff seem to be smoking on the patio the whole time during opening hours, I guess they smoke inside, too when the pub is closed? Maybe this is why the bathroom smelled of smoke, coming through from their part of...
Read moreI would highly recommend visiting The Crown. The welcome we received was very warm and friendly, the food excellent - the crème brulee superb! No ordinary pub-grub! This is a very old building and is full of character. OK, I've read some of the other reviews, and yes, the room we had was a bit dated, décor-wise, but it was clean, the bed was comfortable and we had a good nights' sleep. I want to write an honest review, so I will say here and now, if you're looking for a modern, light, airy room, with wall-to-wall designer tiles in the bathroom, try the Premier Inn. If, however, you're looking for a comfortable place to stay, something with a bit of character with staff who really care whether you're enjoying your stay and who do their utmost to ensure that you do, then give The Crown a try. There was live music on the night we stayed there, but we were expecting that, as we'd visited the website before our stay. This turned out to be a bonus, as the band were brilliant, and we had a most unexpectedly enjoyable evening getting to know some of the 'locals', who were all very friendly. Breakfast next morning was every bit as delicious as the food we'd had the previous day, and worth every penny. We will...
Read moreMy partner and I had booked in for one night during the goodwood revival at 71.40 for a double. We arrived and went to check in, only to be told there was no booking. I checked and they had clearly held an amount on my card and confirmed a booking over two months before when I placed it. The bar man said there was a room, but it would be £225 a night. Other than that, he didn't want to help and said 'call booking'. Leaving me and my pregnant partner with nowhere to stay. I called booking, who called The Crown, only for them to be told it would be £150 to stay and that he was too busy to speak with them and hung up. Booking had a read receipt to show the owners had seen the booking and have opened an investigation. I hope to see them removed from booking. Clearly realised they could get more with it being the revival had booked it to somone else. Leaving a pregnant lady with no place to stay 300 miles from home. No willingness to help having been the ones who made the mistake (or purposeful choice as I believe to upsell customer rooms from under them). Save yourself the hassle and avoid. Was very loud music and rude bar man, possibly a lucky escape, but thats not the point and we...
