Read moreI recently visited The Wellington in Borehamwood, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Tucked just a couple of minutes' walk from Elstree & Borehamwood Station, it has a warm and welcoming vibe that makes you feel instantly at ease.
It's not one of those flashy, modern gastropubs, but thatâs part of its charm. The space is cozy and relaxed, featuring a mix of traditional pub dĂ©cor with a slightly rustic touch. Thereâs also a lovely outdoor seating area, which is perfect when the weather is nice, especially for Sunday lunch or a casual evening drink.
The food exceeded my expectations. I had the Sunday roast, and it was honestly one of the best Iâve had locallyâtender roast beef, fluffy Yorkshire pudding, and flavor-packed gravy. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, unlike something preheated from a freezer.
The menu offered a great range of classic pub dishes, along with a few nice surprises. My friend ordered the southern fried chicken burger, which came out perfectly crispy and juicy. The portion sizes were just right, and everything was well-seasoned.
They also have a decent drinks menu. I enjoyed a cold pint and later tried one of their cocktails (the espresso martini was particularly good). Prices were fair; nothing felt overpriced.
Service was genuinely great. The staff were friendly, attentive, and down-to-earth. Our server checked in on us just the right amount, and even as the place started to get busier, they managed everything without rushing us. It felt like they truly cared, which isnât always the case in busier pubs.
Everything was clean, including the toiletsâwhich I believe is a good indicator of how a place is run. The tables were cleared quickly, and the overall space felt well-kept without being overly polished.
If you're looking for a relaxed pub with great food and excellent service, The Wellington is definitely worth a visit. Itâs not pretentious; it offers good vibes, delicious meals, and a cozy atmosphere. I would happily returnâespecially for the roast!
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Whether youâre a local or just passing through Borehamwood, itâs a...
Read moreDespicable and disgraceful customer service - staff aggressive and flat out lied to us. We were a table of 6 for dinner, one of our party ordered just some roast potatoes instead of a main meal.
It was not until our meal arrived that the waitress told us they had run out of roast potatoes, and therefore offered an alternative of mashed potato. We did not want mashed potato and instead asked if we could have chips. We were told this was impossible, despite them having chips available and that chips were the same price as roast potatoes. Instead we were told we had to go to the bar, request a refund for the potatoes, and then make a new order for chips. The staff were rude and derogatory when they told us this - despite it not being our mistake.
So at this point food had arrived except for the person that had ordered the roast potatoes, which felt unfair, especially given we were told to sort it out ourselves. So we went to the bar and ordered the portion of chips, but asked if it could be rushed. The staff were then extremely rude and aggressive , telling us âeveryone here has ordered food, we donât rush foodâ, which is pretty insensitive given we only needed it rushed because they waited until everyoneâs food to arrive to inform us that it had run out, and that they refused to replace it without us explicitly going up to reorder it.
To add insult to injury, everyone that ordered a Sunday roast had received roast potatoes with their meal including an extra portion of the potatoes that another friend ordered with their roast. So we questioned how the potatoes could possibly have run out.
So to summarise, the staff lied to us about the potatoes running out, and then refused to swap them out for a viable alternative and instead were genuinely rude and aggressive despite us trying to be patient and understanding.
This may sound trivial given it is about a couple potatoes, but it shows a clear sign of how the venue treat their customers. They have no interest in their customers having a peaceful and enjoyable meal and instead are happy to dismiss the basic principles of...
