I'm giving it 1 star just because I have to give it a star to place a review. We went based on the good reviews it had and had previously been once before and was really good. From the moment we was asked what drinks we wanted to leaving, the whole experience was a joke. A young waiter came to take our drinks order, my partner asked what ales was available and their response was 'I don't know, go and have a look at the bar'. We ordered drinks and then was asked to order food. For starters we wanted chicken wings, which they had none, so we ordered chicken goujons. For mains we ordered kids fish, chips and PEAS and adults fish and chips and I ordered the pulled brisket on a ciabatta. We waited around 40 mins for the food to start arriving to which the kid's fish and chips came with beans, I questioned this as my son will only eat peas hence ordering it with peas, the young waiter argued that on the menu it comes with beans (the menu states pea's). The adults fish and chips was delicious. The pulled brisket on ciabatta was sliced meat that couldn't even pull apart or chew and was very tough. I waited for the young waiter to come back to see if everything was OK with the food so I could ask them about my sandwhich but no one ever come back. I sat and waited thinking maybe they could be busy but 20-30 mins later still no sign, a customer from the pub came and asked if we required a member of staff so she called someone over to sort us out. I explained the situation with my sandwhich to which the young waiter pulled my plate away, didn't give me chance to explain, didn't offer anything in replace and no apology for how bad the sandwhich was. We asked for the bill, still no apology or explanation to say whether I had recieved the wrong food or the description of the item was wrong, my partner asked if we still had to pay for the meal that we didn't eat and they said they would remove it and turned away and said bye. Quite rude to be fair. For an adult meal, kids meal and 2 drinks, it still...
Read moreFrom the outside you would be tempted to assume it's an old style pub with an old flat cap chap and jack Russel in the corner.
It's the first time I went in, I admit I made the same assumption.
But when I opened the very big door I was astonished by how modern and contemporary the setting was. Very nice indeed.
The staff were polite and although I only came for a drink later in the evening, I've been told by a friend the food is also good. Hearty, tasty and wholesome and easy on the pocket.
One pet hate of mine in local pubs is the gents toilets are more often than not neglected, stinking dirty places. I was delighted to see a clean Gents at the Royal, and someone had made an effort to make it a nice place to be, with posh air fresheners and nice hand soap.
Despite my first impressions of the traditional exterior this is a prime example of not to judge a book by its cover, in the contrary you may just be in...
Read moreUnfortunately our last time coming here, very disappointed after several good meals here in the past. Went around 6pm last Friday evening. It was quiet in the dining area. We were looking forward to our meal, I had fish and chips, husband had steak pudding, chips and peas. My fish was such a let down ... small, thin and the fish inside the greasy batter was dry and grey....no soft white flakes as it in the past. Husbands steak pudding had hard suet pastry.... really overcooked! Both our chips resembled cardboard, not edible. The best part of the meals were the drinks. No return for us....sad to see the decline in the quality of the food. I complained to the waitress, she said she was sorry and that the landlord wasn't in the best of moods so will tell him at a later date of our thoughts.... unprofessional service, especially as he had...
