Very disappointing experience!! I don't usually leave bad reviews but I was actually shocked at the experience we had, even more shocked seeing they have 4stars!! Having been to the other cafes in red brick I thought I'd take my Dad to this one.
Dirty, bad food, bad drinks, expensive & tip added without a bill!!
We sat down and the first thing I noticed was the sticky table...fine we were just excited for breakfast together and very hungry!
The tea pot was splattered with grease/water marks and the cappuccino was very poor, tasteless and just foamy. My Dad didn't even finish his tea, he said it was as weak as dishwater (he's a war time baby who doesn't leave a thing!).
The food came and at first look I thought it looked good. Unfortunately the taste wasn't there at all. I had the sweetcorn and halloumi fritters and paid extra for bacon. The fritters weren't cooked or crispy, still undone inside. The eggs were watery and the avocado had black bits. Not to mention the avocado pip LEFT in. I bit on this and luckily didn't crack a tooth! My father had sourdough with mushroom, eggs and truffle. His bread was soggy and wet, the portion was poor for £12.50 with only one slice of bread and he said it was all quite bland. My breakfast was £15 and funnily enough I had sweetcorn fritters the week prior with halloumi, spicy beans, eggs and avocado for £8.50 which was delicious.
I chose not to say anything during the visit because it was my dad's idea/treat and I didn't want to ruin the moment for him. I was hoping he enjoyed his at least. Also, neither of us had eaten and it was 11-12noon. l had hoped he at least enjoyed his.
The male waiter was pleasant, he did his job, however the woman behind the counter making coffees and serving was unfriendly and rude. She didn't ask or say anything ab or it the visit just quoted c.£36 but didn't provide a bill. We paid but then I asked for an itemised bill as it didn't make sense. They had added a £3.60 tip!!!!
I like to tip and make a point of it, but I was annoyed enough at paying for the poor food, but a tip for breakfast at a cafe inside a shop when not one part of the process was up to standard, was infuriating. We paid just under £37 for 2 breakfasts and 2 drinks. I'm still shocked that a weak cup of tea is £3?! Or a crossiant £4.40/60?! But to self tip, without providing a bill for the customer to see this is so cheeky.
I'd never go back. A real example of being duped by a good...
Read moreWe visited on Saturday lunchtime and it was extremely busy. I get that this is a relatively new venture so maybe things will improve but really not impressed by the service given. It took some time to order, most of the staff seemed to be busy clearing tables and bringing out food and it was hard to attract their attention, there only seemed to be one person actually taking orders. I ordered the fish goujons sandwich, and my husband the vegetarian breakfast. When the food arrived at first glance it looked tasty & well presented, and I have to say that my fish goujons sandwich was delicious . However the vegetarian breakfast was another matter. Firstly the beans were not hot - they were in a container which was cold so obviously someone had forgotten to stick them in the microwave. There was no butter for the toast, and no mushroom, but there was a hash brown which didn't appear on the original menu. The main disappointment was the lack of halloumi fritters, which seemed to have been replaced by sweetcorn fritters. On questioning this with the staff we were told that they had run out of mushrooms (surely it would have been polite to have informed us of this beforehand) and that the halloumi was in with the sweetcorn. Perhaps we were unlucky but my husband failed to find any trace of halloumi in his. At payment we tried to communicate our disappointment but this was brushed aside by the man who we were told was the manager. He insisted that the halloumi was in the four small fritters that had been on the plate. We tried to explain that the price of a veggie breakfast was exactly the same as a full English, and in effect the fritters had taken the place of the bacon and sausage, and as such we felt that we should have been given larger pieces of halloumi, particularly as there had been no mention of sweetcorn on the menu! He did offer to give us some cakes to take away, but we both felt that he really did not feel that we had a point, which was disappointing. Based on what we had I feel the vegetarian breakfast is extremely poor value for money and would...
Read moreIt’s sad that ever since Filmore and Union closed, we’ve had Hideaway Kitchen. Hideaway… it’s hiding because the food is shameful? Is that the inspiration for the name?
Despite the owner of this restaurant boasting of her experience in fine dining the food here just about falls short of dreadful. If you think otherwise, I pity your palate. This time, I was absolutely appalled. And before you ask, “why come here if you hate the place?”, it’s because I had to get lunch from somewhere while the gas and water at home had been switched off. I needed something within walking distance so I could get back to work.
I already knew that I wasn’t going to be amazed but charging me £15.50 for the pathetic bagel put in front of me after a long wait surprised me. The quality of the ingredients was noticeably poor. The bagel tasted cheap, the texture of the salmon was too watery, and the rocket was wilted. Mind you I’ve lived close to some of the best bakeries in East and South East London and they’ve charged no more than £9 for a salmon and cream cheese bagel of even better quality.
I had some coffee after lunch which tasted like water. Who charges £3.85 for a cup of weak coffee?! The cake was OK but wasn’t worth £4.50.
Just to show you the severe drop in quality I’ve attached a picture from February 2025 when I came to buy new sofas and one from today. Why this place is still in business at Redbrick fascinates me. This place needs to go. Seriously, please don’t think of eating here unless you want to feel...
