Finally dropped by Belgrave after listening to my friends rave about the pizza. Spoiler alert, it's decent. Firstly, I went early to queue for the pizza deal (2 for the price of 1). Here comes the main character of today's review. The server was completely out of it. The server was a female staff that has shoulder-length blonde hair. She was wearing a striped shirt.
The service she provided was diabolical. They could have been having a bad day, who knows. But the audacity to disappear and "go for a break" after the failed service is insane.
Firstly, I was on time for the pizza deal, and the queue was relatively short. But since she was seemingly spiritless, she wasn't keeping track of everyone's orders in front of me. My friends ordered before me. Another group was in front of me. Somehow she ended up serving the other group first. Since it was a mess, the clock struck 7 and I was not eligible for the offer. That's fine, i could have reached earlier innit.
Secondly, when it was my turn to order, I placed an order for two SLICES of pizza. Thereafter i went to wait by the side. 15 minutes pass, and I go up front to ask for my food. She looked at me and said, "Your friends took the slices. I've passed it to them". I said no, they didn't. It's logically not even possible because a few of the others from the other group were still waiting for the same pizza I was waiting for. She proceeds to gaslight me. I was so confused. You know what's the best part? My friends ordered TWO PIES of pizza. In a box. Two full pizzas. How. Is that even possible that my two slices were taken by them. Anyway, she said, check it and ill give you the two pieces if they dont have it. I make my way to my friends and explained myself. Obviously they didn't have it. As I went back to the counter, I see her scrambling away. She made eye contact with me, it was not a coincidental break.
Thereafter the only remaining staff was a guy backfacing all of us and making the pizzas. This went on for 10 minutes. I stood at the counter, waiting for someone to serve me. The guy making the pizzas said she's gone for a break. By then it had been 30 minutes and I was hungry asf.
Then, the savior arrived. Joe. I'm so glad I got your name. Thank you for rectifying the issue. I explained the issue to Joe and he made sure I got my pizza.
That one staff made sure that I will not visit Belgrave ever again. What a gem to...
Read moreI've been to Belgrave a fair bit over the past few years, so feel I can give a solid review of the bar experience - please note I've not been here for a gig though so can't talk about that particularly.
Pros: usually a great atmosphere, lots of bartenders helps keep queues down. Good selection of beers and plenty of spirits and cocktails to choose from. Drinks are avaerage price for this kind of bar, you're not going to get scalped but neither are you going to have a cheap night.
Tasty pizza and burgers/fries are available from their two small outlets within the bar, a bit pricey if you're at peak time but pizza slices are 2for1/half price before 7 on Mon-Thurs I believe.
The location is generally good with buses and taxis, there's no parking at the place but there's enough big carparks nearby you could park it if you were designated driver or something.
Very much a younger person's establishment, I'd put the average age around mid twenties in there, and it's mostly for drinks and music so not a quiet place.
The rooftop is nice, you get good views and they do have heaters for when the weather is colder, I haven't really sat in the street cafe but it looks ok, they've worked to make it nicer than just some alleyway.
Cons: can get VERY busy, which is understandable! But you could end up waiting a while for drinks and food, and definitely struggle to find somewhere to sit down if that was your aim on a busy Friday/Saturday evening
It can also get VERY loud. Too loud to talk really, in fact the one reason I'm giving 4 stars is that sometimes, say for example a Thursday evening after work where you might just want a few drinks and a conversation is made difficult by the DJ or sound system playing dance music, when it's clear nobody is in a dancing music just yet. I appreciate that's a hard balance sometimes for a venue but, read the room I guess?
All of this is subjective and not meant to be definitive. A final con I would perhaps note is it does have two flights of stairs to get to the gents toilet from the ground floor, but then again there's not much they can probably...
Read moreAsked the bartender for a ‘double spiced rum and coke’ and waited 2 minutes for the drink. I then received 2 drinks and I proceeded by asking if they were mine. The bartender then told me he thought I’d asked for a ‘couple spiced rum’. What does this even mean? Why would anyone ask for that; he then went on to complain about how I was ‘rude all night’ despite that being only my 2nd drink of the night. I told him I would like the drink that I ordered and then he told me that they had stopped serving, despite me ordering the drink 5 minutes prior at this point. I asked to speak to a manager and got informed that the boy I was speaking to was the manager. As I asked to discuss the situation civilly beside the bar, he called security and had me kicked out. This is totally unfair and an obvious abuse of power. I remained calm throughout the entire encounter yet the barman arose in anger and refused to talk to me in a civil manner. I have autism and I refuse to tolerate this treatment in an environment that should be accepting to customers of my disadvantage. I tried to articulate my viewpoint but was shutdown by the “manager’s” unfair treatment. I am really upset by this and would appreciate an apology. I understand how it might’ve come across but in no scenario is this how a disadvantaged customer...
