Went to see the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition and was quite disappointed. On entering the gallery I was expecting some posters or directions to the exhibition. Unfortunately I had just walked straight past it to the right of the entrance. I turned and by chance saw people entering a darkened room through automatic doors. The heading for the exhibition was turned through 90 degrees at the side of the doorway. Not a natural reading position when trying to get your attention. The exhibits were drawings and writings of the great man's work, inventions, anatomy and sculptures. All pages about A4 or less, framed behind glass and under spotlight. However for me they were a little low on the wall as I am 6'-4" tall it was painful stooping to see. The description plagues were even lower and I found the whole visit painful. The wasted wall space could have been usefully filled with enlargements of the exhibits as Leonardo was famous for his miniscule writing and it would give visitors a chance to actually see what was being exhibited. There was also a short video running demonstrating how the paper, paints, inks and quill pens were made at the time. A small exhibition that I would have been even more disappointed about if I had traveled any distance to see. I just traveled in from Leeds 9 thank goodness. And that review is from a big admirer of Leonardo.
Small collection of artworks on the walls, and a sculpture section upstairs that I cannot even describe as it was not my personal idea of anything. Great building that could have so much more art displayed. The cafeteria area is large. The bulding next door can be accessed by the overhead corridoor or from the street. This is the Henry Moore Institute, again, just not to my personal taste. No cost of entry to either building and no tickets required. We've maybe spoilt ouselves over the years with some of the best galleries in europe. There are far better galleries in York & Hull. Again only my opinion, and I'm sure some people wouldn't be impressed with what I like. Still glad we went, each to their own as they say.
Had a fab date with my partner here about a couple months ago. Didn't expect to find such a cool spot for a day out. The place is packed with all sorts of art, from classic paintings to modern stuff that'll make you go "huh?". We had a laugh trying to interpret some of the weirder pieces. The building itself is pretty swanky too, all grand and historical. Best part? It's free entry, so perfect for us budget-conscious culture vultures. We ended up in the cafe afterwards for a coffee and a natter about our favorite bits. If you're in Leeds and fancy feeling a bit cultured without breaking the bank, give this nice museum a go! A lil pro tip: dont use the toilet on the ground floor that headed out to the park 🤢
Great Art Gallery well worth a visit . On arriving I must admit I wasn't aware of Eileen Agar and at first wasn't to sure but after I while warmed to her and left a complete convert . My favourites were the paintings of the Ploumanach Stones they were quite mesmerising and beautiful . The photos she painted them from were in the Gallery too . This was closely followed by her Cleopatra painting which I found kind of mesmerising too . And thirdly her self portrait . The Veiled Venus Sculpture by Kuhne Beveridge and Ella Von Wrede was cool and enchanting . Praxiteles by Percy Wyndham Lewis I loved also . The guides were very nice and welcoming . Worth a visit you may become a Eileen Agar fan too .
I admit I visited in a bad mood after a short visit to the "No Henry Moore" museum next door. You CAN enter the Leeds Museum from Moore, but it's a bad idea. You end up in a miserable cellar of shuttered rooms. It's really bad. Once upstairs things improve, but it's not a big museum. Nothing like Birmingham or Manchester or even Aberystwyth. The tiled café looked nice, but was closed for a private function. Some excellent pictures, a fine Hepworth, and a Moore out front. Some bad sculpture too. A real return to Earth for us after a few weeks in Germany. The museums expose the hollow Visit Leeds claim to be the cultural capital of Yorkshire.
The Leeds Art Gallery is an astonishing hymn to the power of municipal philanthropy and the desire to acquire and make available for viewing, free of charge, art that nourishes the soul and inspires the spirit. I was here to see two exhibitions: The Lives Of Others" and "An Axis Of Abstraction - Art in Cornwall and Yorkshire : Then & Now. " They didn't disappoint. The art on show was beautifully displayed in gallery's flooded with natural light. If you visit Leeds Art Gallery, be sure to spend time in the tea room on the ground floor. It is a beautiful temple of Victorian tiling.
