Review based on takeaway rather than eating in but one would hope the food is identical for both options.
Firstly I phoned through my order and when the telephone was eventually answered I was asked to wait. I then listened to them serving someone at the counter for a couple of minutes before then giving my order. Other local places do this too, I find it rude.
I was told I'd have a 45 minute wait for collection, expected on New Year's Day.
Upon arrival 45 minutes later I was asked to take a seat for a couple of minutes. This ended up being 30 additional minutes.
Restaurant not exceptionally busy, phone not ringing much and those who did call all wanted delivery which apparently wasn't available as their driver hadn't turned up.
I unpacked everything when I got home and noted that the rice that was supposed to come with the shashlik was missing. As I'd ordered a portion for someone else I opted not to call and report this as it's generally a small pot anyway. Irritating though and something to note if you're ordering this dish.
The lamb madras was incredibly oily but also watery at the same time. Heat was OK, lamb tender but lacking depth in the sauce. It was like a spiced lamb stew.
Lemon rice just regular stuff with chopped rind in, not unusual around here but lacking refinement.
Keema paratha "slimy" inside but OK for taste.
Papadum tasted of fish, presumably a shared oil issue.
Overall a little disappointed as others seem to rate it highly. I opted to try a new place rather than my safe local option but suspect this will be my last time.

Read moreI recently dined at Gate of India and it was an absolutely delightful experience. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and a warm and welcoming staff. The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of dishes to choose from, including both traditional and contemporary options. I particularly enjoyed the tandoori chicken and the butter chicken, which were both delicious and expertly prepared. The naan bread was also a standout, it was fresh and fluffy.
The service was also top-notch, with the wait staff being attentive and helpful in recommending dishes. I also liked that the restaurant had a great selection of vegetarian and vegan options.
Overall, I highly recommend Gate of India to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Indian dining experience. The food is amazing, the service is great, and the atmosphere is perfect for a special night out or a casual meal with friends or family. I will definitely be returning to enjoy more of the delicious food in the...
Read moreWe ordered 3 curries, 1 kashmiri roganjosh, and 2 chicken masalas.
The roganjosh was really nice, not what I'd expect from a roganjosh, but still really nice.
The chicken masalas however were just curry flavoured soup with chicken. They have the chicken masala under "Chefs Special" on the menu, but I really don't know why. It tastes and looks like, a korma with red food dye added to it. You can clearly tell it was cooked with coconut, like a korma usually is. Definitely not worth £7.95... Could've found the same quality in a microwave meal. Also, when they sell both a chicken tikka masala, and a chicken masala, you would expect that the chicken masala didn't have chicken tikka in it.
The people in my house who ordered this, didn't eat it, and reordered from trojan.
For comparison, in the pictures, you can see what a chicken masala should look like, and what Gate of...
