Decided to drive to Lewes with my girlfriend yesterday and we stopped at Bill's for lunch. I had not been there for years and had good memories overall from the Brighton venue. We waited 5 minutes as it is always busy and then got seated, placed our order for starters and mains, so far so good. They sort of forgot to bring the starters and brought everything pretty much together which we were fine with. I mean, the place is packed and those things happen. Now we were seated near by the open kitchen and l could clearly see the pass and as a former chef l enjoy looking at the chef putting the dishes on there ready to be picked up by the waitresses and waiters. When they brought our starters, l noticed the chef putting my Mojo chicken skewers on the pass and was delighted to see it was ready. I then saw a waitress in a red top removing 2 skewers from the plate and then putting them in another plate at the end of the pass. As a chef, l know well that the plate at the end which had a paper towel in it is for the unwanted item or things that come back, usually staff gets to eat that. Anyway, it didn't bother me at that point. It is when they brought me the dish which had 3 small chicken skewers, a tortilla, a bit of lettuce and a piece of cucumber. I mean the 3 skewers did not even add up to the size of a chicken breast. It was ridiculous that someone would present this to a customer who paid £11,95 for this thing. Your local Kebab shop will do a much better job for less money. I was just baffled and had to refuse the dish. It is the first time of my life l actually had to refuse a dish in a restaurant. The waitress did a great job into trying to explain to me that she probably removed the skewers because the chef always makes extra and they then take some out of the plates... She offered me to select another dish, however, it literally cut my appetite and just asked then to cancel it, I just didn't want it. So overall, l would say that they have good decoration, food is "ok" and service is good. Although, the sweet potatoes fries were dry, the ham under the poached eggs was dry and tasteless and they put the piece of bread on top of the humus as if it was just dropped in it. Personally, l now see it as a fancy Wetherspoons basically....

Read moreI am a huge fan of Bill's and regularly visit the Brighton and Chichester branches, and without fail, they live up to my expectations and previous experiences. The Lewes branch is the original restaurant, and unfortunately, it let itself down big time. I ordered scrambled egg with sourdough toasted bread. The bread was so lightly toasted it was just warm bread 🍞 with no crunch, no butter supplied, and the portion of overcooked scrambled egg 🥚 was disappointing and unappetising. I asked for the bread to be retoasted and waited 6 min to be brought a new plate of hotter bread, still pale with no toasted crunch. Waited another 6 min for proper browned toast, by which time my scrambled egg was cold !! But hunger won out over complaining again. We were a group of 9, and when we asked the waitresses to take individual payments, we were told that there were too many of us and to use a QR code on the table to pay. I am a tech happy person, but this was a complicated process that required you to have your card physically with you for the pin number, which some of us did not have ( that's the whole idea of contactless). In the end, I had to ask the manager to pay the remaining money the normal way. I was surprised when she informed me that we could have paid with the machine and I was wrongly advised. I will say thank you to her for taking the service charge off as part compensation for the hassle even though I said it was ok. I hope this was just a glitch in an otherwise fab restaurant chain... or was not even that...
