Do not eat here! I ordered a brie, spinach and chutney panini for £7. Already expensive but made worse by the meagre filling. I returned one half (photographed) as it had half a slice of brie, one spinach leaf and not even filled with chutney. The half I ate was marginally improved by an extra spinach leaf. I hate complaining, but I had to say something about this. The staff were very understanding but unfortunately were unable to offer anything other than a shrug and that this is how they are told to make it. I didnt requeat a refund as Id eaten half of it and one was not offered. The manager or owner really needs to make some changes here. Its pretty shocking for 7 quid! If you're in lewes and hungry I recommend going next door to here, to the bakery and buying a lovely bagel or roll for 3.75 (which I did afterwards).

I'm a college student visiting from the U.S., and was in Lewes for a little over two weeks. I wandered into the Riverside Cafe (Downstairs) on the first day, and kept coming back after that. The staff go above and beyond to be both helpful and friendly, food comes out promptly, and the food is delicious. It's not fancy (posh?), but everything is tasty and fresh. I had multiple sandwiches, toasties, milkshakes, and smoothies over my 16 days here, and if I'm ever back in Lewes, this is where I'll go first. Shoutout to Anthony, Jade, Stuart, and the rest, you were one of the best parts of my trip!

Despite its name, this isn't really a cafe by the River. You would be better off going upstairs to the Brasserie for a decent table and a view of the river. Had the full English breakfast which was passable and the worst Iced Chai Latte I'd ever had where I took one sip and the drink just disappeared. Was annoyed with myself as found this Cornish pie place up the road with decent desserts as well. Keep looking around before committing yourself.

This venue enjoys a fantastic location. It is however it seems very badly managed.

Completely and utterly disorganised, terrible communication, poor signage, collosal wait times.

I arrived and saw the large notice instructing if dining outside, to take a seat, and we would be served. We did so, no one came. After fifteen minutes, went in and asked, and was told there is no table service, you have to queue and order at the counter. I advised about the sign, they said 'oh sorry about that' and then left the sign where it was - so others will continue to not get any service?

No one was taking orders at the counter, or explaining anything, everyone was in the prep area, and one girl cleaning tables that were obviously already clean, and occasionally taking something out.

The staff seemed oblivious to the queue, or the poor service being offered - they were in a world of their own.

When arriving at the counter, discovered practically everything was off the menu, as they didn't have someone in who could cook?

I have worked in hospitality, and it seemed very clear to me, that even with staff down, they could have arranged themselves, and their communication a whole lot better to deliver a better service.

Whoever the manager is if this place, they neglected their staff, their business, and their customers profoundly today.

Not somewhere I would return to quickly. A real shame, since it is a great location, with...

Visited here on Saturday,Me and my mother both work full time and our time together is really valued.

Unfortunately it was a very poor decision to spend our time here .

We waited for our drinks for 30 minutes one black coffee and a cappuccino, asking the waitress politely assuming she may have been busy, however she was very rude and almost dismissed us and went over to clear 3 empty tables ignoring our request.

When our food arrived late it was very greasy, the steak was very poor quality and overcooked, there was also oil covering the plate,I'm lactose intolerant so asked to substitute 2 main items of the dish and was simply offerd leafs as an alternative.

I have worked in a restaurant and a Barista myself and understand the stressful aspect of the role however the service and quality of the food was terrible.

In addition to the service and food I noticed the area we where sitting in was very dirty, lots of dead insects which where in webbs and dust all over the windowsill, where it appeared the cleaning of this area hadn't been done properly for...

Went here in December , service was chaotic . We ordered hot and cold drinks cakes and hot savoury items . We got our drinks followed by the cakes, then we had to ask where the hot savoury items were. We were told there's a new chef and getting to grips with the kitchen ...kind of ,ok, but we weren't talking cooking just heating through. Tried it again today ,Sunday, oh dear 🙃. Ordered hot and cold drinks, a slice of cake. Wanted poached eggs but were told theres no poached eggs, so placed an order for scrambled eggs on toast . We received our drinks and cake but no eggs , after waiting 25 minutes , drinks all drunk, cake all eaten we cancelled the eggs and got a refund, but no apology. We will definitely not be going back. I saw a family group eating at different times to each other rather than all together.. put a system in place guys it's painful to watch. Fab location , crying shame about the standard...
