We have been fairly regular visitors here over 3 years but sadly it seems to have lost its way in the light of competition from new local eateries. Today's offering of 'tomato soup with pesto' was so disappointing - it looked so watery it looked like dishwater and was totally bland and tastless. It was served without the pesto and upon my asking the waitress where it was she said it was 'optional' despite us having been told it was tomato soup with pesto!! The 'soup' was accompanied by a slice of brown bread cut into two and smothered in butter whether I wanted it or not! No crusty bread then to go with the 'soup' and £6.50 is just a rip off. My partner asked me not to make a fuss about this at the time so perhaps Management will take notice of an unfavourable review about the price and quality of their awful soup!! Btw my partner enjoyed her toasted sandwich for £6.50 BUT her request for some bacon with it cost us an extra £1.50 for just one small rasher!!! Hardly endearing if they want their Customers to return without being Grumpy - we...

Was in the area. So looked at the many menus outside so decided to try? So very disappointing. We ordered the big breakfast with tea and brown toast. As we entered we got no hello or hi. The place had a very strange smell throughout. The decor is 1840 army memorabilia with cobwebs everywhere. The carpet is disgusting and needs seriously deep cleaned. I had to use the toilets at the rear. You walk through a corridor filled with freezers and loads of junk at the rear . And again the smell. The toilet was horrible . The mirror like the whole place needs a serious clean. Our food arrived and the two sausages had a very strange taste so we both left them. There was no flavour at all to our breakfast. And the menu is pages long. There is a glass counter filled with junk and again very dirty. It’s a pity as the place is on the high street and could look and be fantastic. But a good clean and organised de clutter would make such a...

After reading great reviews for this restaurant I was looking forward to trying it out last Sunday. However my experience was a little disappointing I'm afraid. Firstly, they had lost the booking we had made over a week beforehand (1st Feb), but fortunately there was an empty table available at the back. My wife and I had the beef stew and our friend had the mussels. Although the mussels looked and tasted fine our beef stew, presented with a portion of mash, was very basic and watery, quite bland and overall unremarkable although the mustard mash was nice albeit a little over seasoned. Also the service in general was below expectations, for example we weren't offered any side vegatables and had to keep going up to the counter to order anything else we required. It just didn't feel as friendly as I'd hoped. Overall, not terrible but just disappointing after reading the good reviews. Could have just...

We went here twice. First for a coffee which was really good. Nice and hot for a cool day. We went back a few nights later for a dinner. We made a reservation as we have seen it can get a bit busy. We had the Spanish red wine which was something different but highly recommended. It wasn’t as heavy as a Merlot but not as light as a Pinot Noir. We shared three start dishes which was more than enough for two people. The portion sizes are very generous. All the dishes had good flavour and were serves beautifully. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area for any additional travel advice. Definitely worth visiting if in the area.

We visited this restaurant after reading glowing reviews, and it still managed to exceed our expectations! It’s a small, cozy place with an incredible atmosphere and absolutely outstanding food. We started with hummus and toasted bread, followed by roasted chicken for my husband and crab linguine for me. To top it off, we shared a bottle of wine—and everything was simply fantastic! The experience was so wonderful that we couldn’t resist taking a slice of cake to go. The total? Just £60—an amazing value for such a memorable meal. It was a special occasion for us, and we truly couldn’t have chosen a better place. Highly recommended!

Absolutely perfect! I would say one of the best culinary experiences we had by far. From the top mark customer service and hospitality skills to fresh, tasty and homemade food. The food which is absolutely delicious. We have visited The Grumpy Chef two times once during breakfast and once during lunch time. This place is always vibrant and full of life with many costumers but the staff have managed to accommodate us. If you have to wait a few moments for a table don’t hesitate- it’s definitely worth it. We will definitely come back especially to try their dinner menu as it’s open on Fridays and Saturday until 11 pm.
