The worse dining experience ever. From start to finish not good. I was recommended by a friend to go to Shu La La, my first red flag was when I telephoned to book the reservation for 10 people and I had to keep repeating myself as the caller was not listening and asking the same questions over and over, but I thought I would give him the benefit of the doubt because I got good feedback from my friend about the restaurant, so I went ahead and booked my table on Monday 17th October 2022 for a work staff reunion where we were coming from all sides of London and beyond; Kent and Stockport, but unfortunately he couldn't make it. "that might have been a blessing for him" My second red flag was coming into the restaurant and saying hello to the waitress, thinking she would greet me and seat me to my table, but this was not reciprocated as she just carried on with what she was doing, but I saw some of my colleagues seated already and walk over to them and sat down. A young waiter came over after 5 minutes to ask if we wanted drinks, once all colleagues arrived we then started to order of the menu, unfortunately it's not the sort menu that I am used to and several other colleagues was finding it difficult to choose what to eat. There was no smiles, from the waitress, when she asked for menu's back. When the food came the service was appallingly the waitress could have just dropped food in front of us. There was a mix up, with to many rice portions that came out, which was returned with no apology.
There was also another big party that came in about 15 minutes after us and they were very loud, shouting at the top of their voices and smoking there vape which stunk like cigarette, we could hardly hear ourselves speaking, I mentioned to the waiter that they were loud, but it went unnoticed because they carried on with their shouting the whole time we were there, even their food was coming out before ours, and they seemed to be treated much differently.
In the end we ate most of food, but left and went across the road to a dessert restaurant to be able to have conversation and peaceful ambience.
I or my party will not be visiting this establishment again in the...
Read moreI got a delivery from this place today with UberEats for the first time and I was extremely disappointed on so many levels. First of all the delivery time was almost an hour and a half even though when I placed the order the estimate for 35 to 45 minutes. The food seems to have sat in the boxes too much time and it was all stuck together. The oresentariin was disgusting. The spring rolls were stuck together and all became a big mass in a paper bag, whixh was not the right thing to transport them. The same with the pancake it was in a paperbag and was squished. In terms of flavour everything was wrong. The spring rolls had no filling in the them and they were extremely soft and all stuck together like a big dough mass and not crispy. The sweet and chilli sayce was extremely chilli, not like any other sauce I had before from other places. The chicken dumpling had also almost no filling and the filling was just vegetables with no hint or taste of chicken. The sweet and chilli chicken was all stuck together with the sauce being solidified. The panckae tasted like an omelet. All of these after I waited for an hour and a half to eat. Plus the delivery driver seemed nothing like the delivery driver in the picture. I was waiting outside so I saw that the guy parked his motorbike on the opposite side of the pavement and never took his helmet on which was extremely strange. He crossed the pavement and came to me and gave me the food all this time wearing his helmet but from the little I saw he looked to have black hair not blonde like in the picture. His voice sounded like he was 20 years old whereas the guy on the app photo looks well in his forties. He also dropped the receipt of the food while walking to me and didn't bother to pick it up. The whole thing was awful from start to finish and I feel sorry for themoney I spent on late stuck squishy disgusting food from someone not registered in the app. The worst is that there are no options on the Ubereats app for these types of issues so I can't find a way to complain. Appalling. I can't recommend this...
Read moreShu La La — My Go-To Chinese Restaurant in London for Authentic Sichuan Flavors!
As someone who's super picky about Chinese food, Shu La La is honestly the only place in London I keep coming back to — and it hits the spot every single time.
Located just two stops from UCL, right next to Holloway Road Station, it’s a favorite among UCL students (myself included). Think of it as our unofficial Sichuan BBQ canteen.
Here are my must-order dishes:
🥩 Charcoal-Grilled Whole Lamb Ribs Unlike the usual oven-roasted ribs in the UK, these are grilled over real charcoal. The meat is juicy, the skin is crispy, and the spices (cumin, chili, five-spice) are perfectly balanced. One bite and you're hooked.
🥘 Sour Soup Beef This dish screams authentic Chengdu flavor. Generous beef slices, enoki mushrooms, green peppers, and a spicy-sour broth that’s both comforting and bold. Best enjoyed on a rainy London day.
🍚 "Ear-Slap" Fried Rice Yes, it’s really called that — and it lives up to the name. Stir-fried to perfection with salted egg yolk and big chunks of shrimp. It’s rich, fragrant, and dangerously addictive. You’ll wish you ordered two.
🥬 Spinach in Broth This is my go-to “calm down” dish. Shrimp, bacon bits, and spinach cooked in umami-rich broth — perfect to cool your tongue after spicy dishes. Bonus tip: pour the broth over rice = magic.
🌶️ Spicy Chicken (La Zi Ji) Fried until crispy and tossed with dry chili peppers — a classic Sichuan dish done right. My Northern Chinese friends say it tastes like home, which says it all.
💸 Prices About £30–£40 per person if you’re sharing dishes, or £12–£15 for individual rice bowls.
If you're missing real Chinese food or just looking to try amazing Sichuan in London, Shu La La is a must. I’ve tried dozens of Chinese spots in the city — this is the one I always...
