I love 15 grams for its unsurpassable coffee, friendly staff and stylishly understated decor.
Now after dinner the other day I love it even more.
The delicious small plates were perfect for the place. On the menu the dishes sounded simple but on arrival it was clear that a great deal of thought and care had gone into their preparation.
Gildas were classily presented on metal skewers and just the right piquancy to stir your taste buds.
Steak Tartare came as loosely formed hummock of perfect micro-cubes making for a far more interesting texture than the usual mince. The steak was tender and flavourful and supplied by Ellis' in the Village. I mopped it all up with the excellent bread.
Served by the amiable chef Mantas (whose imposing frame belies the delicacy of the food he creates) who happily explained how it was details like the hand-chopped steak that were essential to making a dish special. His passion for cooking and quality ingredients was very evident.
I must admit I don't remember the exact ingredients in dessert that came as an exquisitely formed flower. But I wolfed it down in a moment which says it all really.
I'll blame the forgetfulness on two expertly mixed and presented Daquiris that accompanied my meal and imparted a delicious glow as I left full, happy and planning a return visit to 15 grams not just for the best coffee but the...

Early 2025 update: I'm pleased to say the situation seems to have improved at 15 grams. I've decided to give them another chance and my recent visits have been broadly positive. Friendly staff and the coffee is spot on again. I’m sorry to say this place is slowly becoming a shadow of its former self. I used to hop on my bike and cycle down to 15grams for 15 minutes just to get their great coffee, or come up with any excuse to get to Blackheath for the same reason.
I’ve never felt particularly welcome here, and I didn’t really care that much, but these days this seems to be the new norm: staff uninterested, barely acknowledging your presence, or (as pointed out by other reviewers) not letting you sit down even though the place is empty, due to some bizarre rules. But worst of all, the last two cappuccinos I’ve ordered at 15grams were simply awful: overheated and bitter.
Please, please, please give your staff some training. I can live with them not being super friendly, but this is not some kind of mediocre greasy spoon, and one would expect the coffee to be of top quality and prepared properly, like it used to be not...
Read moreWe come here two to three times a week. The food is the kind I’d make at home, but having someone else prepare it makes it nicer. The vibe is great too. The menu is small, but everything on it is done really well.
It’s a rare kind of coffee shop with both great coffee and great food. Usually, you get one or the other, either a great coffee shop that only does pastries, or a mediocre cafe with a full brunch menu but disappointing coffee. This place nails both.
They make every style of egg you can think of, and they do it good. Just look at the photos, so vibrant, so flavourful, so satisfying.
What I love most is the simplicity of the dishes and how everything tastes fresh and homemade. They’ve even started making their own marshmallows. The ingredients are high quality, golden yolk eggs, Japanese milk bread with a soft sweetness that pairs perfectly with their salty egg mayo, and beautiful sourdough. And the butter, the butter is pure perfection.
I’ve had better pastries elsewhere. I prefer them more buttery and these tend to be a bit dry, but I don’t come here for those so.
The service is consistently great. Everyone’s friendly, and it’s just a nice place to...
